Weekend Weather

The expected value for the amount of rain on Saturday and Sunday is 2 inches and 3 inches, respectively. There is a 50% chance of rain on Saturday. If it rains on Saturday, there is a 75% chance of rain on Sunday, but if it does not rain on Saturday, then there is only a 50% chance of rain on Sunday.

What is the expected value (in inches) for the amount of rain over the weekend?

The question does not state "If it rains on saturday or sunday, it will rain 2 or 3 inches." Rather, it says that the EXPECTED VALUE of rain on saturday and sunday is 2 and 3 inches. In other words, it's already been calculated, and you can just add them together.

We are given the expected values we need. All the other "information" is smokescreen. The solution is the sum of the given expected values, 2 + 3 = 5.

Expected values are already given in the question. Therefore E[Sat] + E[Sun] = 2 + 3 = 5

Since there is expectation of rains on both the days, we can calculate using the linearity of expectation: E[Sat+Sun] = E[Sat] + E[Sun] = 2 inches + 3 inches = 5 inches
