Weighing the Backpack

Henrique and Mariana are using a scale to weigh their backpacks. When weighed separately, the scale shows 3kg and 2kg. When weighed together, the scale shows 6kg. Then something must be wrong, without anything, the scale shows a weight that is not equal to 0. What is the weight of the two backpacks together?


The answer is 7.

a + x = 3 a+x =3

b + x = 2 b+x=2

a + b + x = 6 a+b+x=6

x = − 1 x=-1

a + b = 6 + 1 = 7 a+b=6+1=7

It must be mentioned whether the pans are of different weights or the arms are of different lengths. Two cases give different answers. This question assumed pans of different weights.
