Marathon: Man vs. Cheetah

Logic Level 1

Who would most likely win a marathon: a human or a cheetah?

Note: A marathon is a 26-mile-long race. Also, the cheetah won't eat the man because that's against the rules of the marathon.

Cheetah Human

The other solutions write them as if it's a biology problem. I assumed this is a logic problem: a cheetah doesn't know what a marathon is, so will most likely unable to reach the finish line because it wouldn't know that it's supposed to follow the track.

EDIT: The problem has now been changed to be a Biology problem (earlier it was Logic problem).

EDIT2: And now it's back a Logic problem. Really?

If it is a logic problem then your logic is wrong. If the cheetah is smart enough to know the rules, it is smart enough to know the track :p

  1. Yes, this problem was actually categorized under Logic before it got moved to Biology. This solution was written when it was under Logic.
  2. I didn't see any stipulation that the cheetah knows the rules at all, but yes, if the cheetah is smart enough to understand the abstract concept of "rules", then the cheetah probably also understand the more concrete concept of "path to follow".

Best answer here.

Yup, I thought the same.

It should be that the human will win. Even though the cheetah can't eat the human, it will still try and catch up to the state before eating him/her. This means that the Human is more likely to go first in the competition. :)

The same answer as what I came up with. Nice :D

Yes! agree with @Pi Han Goh

Cheetahs are blazing fast, no doubt, and in a sprint a cheetah would blow a human away.A cheetah can reach a top speed of around 70 miles per hour in about 4 seconds. But, over longer distances, a cheetah will struggle to maintain its top speed without risking total exhaustion. Their large heart and nostrils enable them to accelerate swiftly, but these attributes don’t lend themselves to endurance running, so a man has more chances of winning a marathon over a cheetah.

The problem with this is that, like a man, the cheetah will not be sprinting. Marathons are usually completed at a jogging pace. I imagine that an average cheetah would be able to jog (trot?) 26 miles before a man could, even if they aren't necessarily "built" for it.

Another thing is, a man had to train for weeks to be able to run a marathon at all. I think if a cheetah worked with a trainer for a similar time period, they would be able to finish without a cooldown period.

here , a herder isn't a trained marathon runner, but he was able to catch a cheetah over a long distance.

Beakal Tiliksew - 5 years, 4 months ago

Explanation is logical and fine.. but we haven't made Cheetah run a Marathon yet so dont know really for fact!

Ajit Deshpande - 5 years, 4 months ago

Cheetah can run for 5 min easily

ok I admit that humans are good long distance runners i.e. we have good stamina, but isn't that possible that the cheetah sprints to the point he can, rest, cool himself a while and start running and keep on doing this process? I mean to say that in one sprint cheetah would go far away than a human. till the time the cheetah has cooled, the human still would not be able to get around the cheetah. By this way can the cheetah win?

No... because cheetahs never prosper. ba-dum-pa!

I think that there's no certain answer. If the cheetah knows the rules I think it it would also know that a marathon is won by jogging not sprinting so it wouldn't sprint annd lose it's power.

I'm pretty sure cheetahs can't jog very well.

Since cheetah cannot run at his top speed for a long time but man has stamina to run for a long time so man will win the race

Its all about stamina.

I got this wrong: but multiple answers can be their in this question say

cheetah looks at man and ate him, now if he completes it race than b o t h both w i l l will f i n i s h finish r a c e race a t at s a m e same t i m e time as man is inside cheetah. :p :p

The cheetah can't sweat. Its enlarged heart and lungs and leg muscles are all designed for sprinting. It could do about 2 miles at a time in 90 seconds each, but wouldn't have enough rest period to stay ahead. There's actually documentation on some Kenyan goat herders that ran down some poaching cheetahs, on foot, in less than 5 miles and captured them.

Cheetah can run faster but not longer. Man cannot run faster but can run longer. The sweat keeps his body cool and that is not seen in the case of cheetah.

Cheetahs have a limit if they will run long distance they might face brain hammerage due to internal bleeding caused by the high pressured blood entering the brain

Cheetahs r good short distance runner like sprinters

The cheetah will not know what the marathon is, and they are also not long-distance runners.

Logic???? This is Biology! Anyways, the cheetah can't win because of hunger or thirst or being dehydrated. If this is logic, the human will because cheetahs are dumbbbb.

Does the cheetah have any reason to finish the race? Wouldn't he just walk off?

Well i find no maths in this problem

Muhammad Ather

the real answer is The cheetah is the fastest land mammal in the world. The cheetah, can reach speeds of between 112 and 120 km/h in short bursts covering distances up to 500 m. It has the ability to accelerate from 0 to over 100 km/h in three seconds.

In terms of miles per hour, they can reach around 70 to 75 mph.

However, they can sustain the speed for only short durations, typically around a minute. If they continue to run at top speed for over that time, they will die of exhaustion.

Narayan Palsikar

I think man will win the race because man has 2 legs which can be helpfull to accelerate.

The Tortoise or the Hare?

Nikhil Paratkar
Jan 18, 2016

Cheetah is faster than the human for sure, but animals like cheetah and tiger cannot run so fast for longer distances. They tend to lose their breath very shortly. Humans, on the other hand, due to the structure of their legs and lungs are more like a horse or a camel and can run with that speed for larger distances. If humans decided to hunt, the big cats will never be able to outrun humans over longer distances.

the cheetah won't eat the man because that's against the rules of the marathon, but the man can do anything by the rule, so he can break the legs or can kill the cheetah

Isn't it a good logic ?

Cheetahs are built to have the agility and speed while human are on top when it comes to stamina.

The problem says its marathon not sprinting race. In that case what is the possibility that cheetah will start sprinting and would not jog. In case it sprints whats the possibility that human would not sprint and only jog. Won't he run out of energy. So the answer depends upon how each of them wishes complete the marathon I.e. by jogging or by sprinting. Till that is given either of them have equally likely possibility of winner ng.

Cheetahs can't jog.

Then how are they supposed to travel from one grassland to the other. Won't they jog through the track or even then also they will sprint?

Stamina always wins long-course.

Mason Maron
Jan 15, 2016

Although Cheetahs have the top land speed of any mammal, they lack the endurance to stay at that speed, and would run out of energy, allowing the human to win.

Lol!!!! What if the cheetah can't eat the man.... The man can kill the cheetah!!!! It isn't against the rules. As Ivan koswara said it is a logical one but it has been changed to a biological one.

U r a smart guy.
