What? Are you sure this is worded correctly?

I have ten coins totaling forty cents. Two of them are not dimes. How many pennies do I have?

Details and assumptions

  • Pennies are worth one cent, nickels are worth five cents, dimes are worth ten cents, and quarters are worth twenty-five cents.

  • These are the only type of coins that may be used.

The answer is 5.

I think this is one of those tricky-worded questions that Calvin Lin suggests that we avoid posting, because it confuses people like me.

Notice that I said two of them are not dimes! That doesn't mean the same thing as there are not two dimes! In fact, there ARE two dimes, three nickels, and five pennies, thus 5 \boxed{5} is the answer! The problem is simple once you know that! :D

I feel ashamed, Didn't pay attention to that.

two dimes can also be taken as 5 nickels thus , there are 5 pennies
