What is my average speed?

I am travelling from A to B at a speed of 40 km/hr and from B to C at a speed of 60 km/hr. The ratio of distance A B : B C AB : BC is 1 : 2 1 : 2 . What is my average speed?

Round your answer to the 2 decimal places.

55 km/hr 50 km/hr 45 km/hr 51.43 km/hr

1 solution

One approach here, is to assume the distance from A A to B B to be 40 40 km. So you travelled from A A to B B in one hour. The ratio of distance A B B C \frac{AB}{BC} = = 1 2 \frac{1}{2} , we can see that B C = 80 BC=80 km. From here, solve for the time travelled from B B to C C and that is 4 3 \frac{4}{3} h o u r s hours . Now solve for the average speed in the whole trip.

a v e r a g e average s p e e d = speed= t o t a l d i s t a n c e t o t a l t i m e = \frac{total distance}{total time}= 40 + 80 1 + 4 / 3 = 51.43 k p h \frac{40+80}{1+4/3}=51.43kph
