Let the present ages of Ana, Bernard and Carl be A, B and C, respectively. We have the three equations
A+B+C=32 (1)
B=4+A (2)
C=6+B (3)
Since we want to find A, all the variables in (1) must be A for a shorter solution.
We solve (3) in terms of A, we get
C=6+B=6+4+A=10+A (4)
Now substitute (2) and (4) in (1) to solve for A, we get
A=6
