What Is The Difference Between The USA And India?

Algebra Level 4

In the population census of 2011 , India reported that her population was 1.210 billion. In the population census of 2010 , USA reported that her population was 309 million.

A teenager is defined as a person whose age ranges from 13 to 19 (inclusive), because their age number ends in “teen”. What is the (approximate) ratio of teenagers in India to teenagers in USA today?

There is not enough information given in this question to draw any definite conclusions about the ratio. Let's see what we can do. We know that the Indian population tends to be much younger than the American population, and hence the ratio of teenagers will be greater than 1210 309 = 4 \frac{ 1210}{ 309} = 4 . This leaves the options of 5 : 1 5:1 and 6 : 1 6:1 .

Let's further think of the ratio as % Indian that are 13 - 19 × 1210 % Americans that are 13 - 19 × 309 \frac{ \text{ \% Indian that are 13 - 19 } \times 1210 } { \text{ \% Americans that are 13 - 19 } \times 309} , then the other important aspect to consider is % of Indians that are 13-19 % of American that are 13 - 19 \frac{ \text{ \% of Indians that are 13-19} } { \text{ \% of American that are 13 - 19} } . Given that India is a developing country and America is a very developed country, I'm inclined to believe that this ratio is much greater than 1, and as such would choose 6 : 1 6: 1 , out of the given options .

In the question How Would You Estimate The Number Of American Teens , we see that the estimate is 28.5 million. In the question How Would You Estimate The Number Of Indian Teens , we see that the estimate is 170 million. Hence, the ratio is 170 28.5 = 5.96 \frac{170}{28.5} = 5.96 .

it is like I have 100 Indian ducks and 20 American ducks. How many ducks are between 1 month old and 2 months old. I put 5:1 as a conservative estimate and it says it is wrong!

I don't get how this problem was supposed to be solved lol. Maybe someone can prove me wrong but so far this question from what I've seen is pretty stupid... what does it mean I have to look up more? Should I just look up the actual population? Is there something else that I'm missing? I don't understand why something like this would be posted, especially by Calvin...

There's still a part of me that hopes there's more to this problem than I think, but honestly I can't see how that would be true.

This question shouldn't have been asked at a rating of 2377. Anybody with a Social Science book with the latest edition and a calculator can do it. hahaha Level 5 maths- DIVISION OF WHOLE NUMBERS!!!!

Go to this link UNICEF Statistics , see the first column which gives the total population of teenager of various countries (in thousands).Look for India and USA, and divide their popualations to get 6:1 (approx.).

Note - This is the way I did it. But I don't think this is the correct solution (seeing the rating of problem) as nothing mathemetical (except division) is used in it.

I agree not mathematical, however when you find that mean age in India is 27 versus 37 in USA. One could assume that the 3:1 if you simply divide one population by the other is logically flawed.
