use basic concept with Pythagoras's theorem...

since both the men form a right triangle with sides = 12 and 5 units respectively, Taking the hypotenuse as X

By pythagoras theorem 12 squared + 5 squared is X squared

Therefore x = Sqrt(169)= 13 meters. And since both of them walked in opposite directions, the distance between them is 26 meters.
