{ x + y = 5 . . . . . ( 1 ) 3 x 4 y = 8 . . . . . ( 2 ) \large \begin{cases} x + y & = 5 ~~~~.....(1) \\ 3x - 4y & = 8 ~~~~.....(2) \\ \end{cases}

Now multiplying the first equation by 4 4 and doing ( 1 ) + ( 2 ) (1) + (2) .

( 4 x + 4 y ) + ( 3 x 4 y ) = ( 5 × 4 ) + 8 4 x + 3 x = 20 + 8 7 x = 28 x = 4. \begin{aligned} (4x + 4y) + (3x - 4y) & = (5 \times 4) + 8 \\ 4x + 3x & = 20 + 8 \\ 7x & = 28 \\ x & = 4. \\ \end{aligned}

Now substituting x = 4 x = 4 in ( 1 ) . (1).

4 + y = 5 y = 1 . 4 + y = 5 \implies y = \boxed 1.

Multiplying (1) by 3 and subtracting both equations gives y=1 directly ;)

I love your way of solving it ;)

A warm-up solution :-

x = 5 - y , to be substitute into 3x - 4y = 8,

3(5-y) - 4y = 8 ,

15 - 3y -4y = 8

-7y = 8 -15

-7y = -7

y = 1

As simple as a,b,c :)

there are some different ways to get a sum of 5

1 + 4 2 + 3 3 + 2 4 + 1

i just used these to trial and error with x and y

great problem btw :)
