If one divides the large square into an 8 by 8 grid, one can see that the red stripes, from shortest to longest, have areas of 3, 7, 11, & 15. The percentage area is 3 + 7 + 11 + 15 8 2 = 36 64 = 9 16 = 56.25 % \frac{3+7+11+15}{8^2}=\frac{36}{64}=\frac{9}{16}=\boxed{56.25\%}

Thank you.

The numbers indicate how many unit squares each strip contains. Thus, the percentage of the red portion is: 3 + 7 + 11 + 15 64 = 56.25 % \frac{3+7+11+15}{64}= 56.25\%
