Math In Daily Life: What to Wear, What to Wear? (Winter)

I have 9 pants, 16 shirts, 21 sweaters, 4 mittens, and 3 coats. Assuming that a complete winter outfit consists of pants, shirts, sweaters, a pair of mittens, and coats, how many winter outfits can I wear?

The answer is 18144.

To find the number of outfits or combinations of clothes you can choose from for my winter outfit, multiply together the number of all clothing items I own: 9 p a n t s × 16 s h i r t s × 21 s w e a t e r s × 2 p a i r s o f m i t t e n s × 3 c o a t s = 18144 9\quad pants\quad \times \quad 16\quad shirts\quad \times \quad 21\quad sweaters\quad \times \quad 2\quad pairs\quad of\quad mittens\quad \times \quad 3\quad coats\quad =\quad 18144

\therefore , the number of combinations is 18144.

Technically there are more combinations, because there are 6 ways to choose 2 mittens from 4. However, the mittens might not match.
