The shape of a compound will be in such a way that all the angles between two bonds are maximum. Hence for Sulfur Hexafluoride, the shape is octahedral to satisify's the condition above.

Bond angles don't always have to be equal in a compound, for example in trigonal bipyramidal structures the bond angles are 90 or 120 degrees
