During the first half-hour, he counts 180 30 = 5400 180 \cdot 30 = 5400 which leaves 10710 5400 = 5310 10710-5400 = 5310 . The remaining balance is counted according to:

5310 Σ t = 1 T ( 180 3 t ) = 0 5310 - \Sigma_{t=1}^{T} (180-3t) = 0 ;

or 5310 180 T + 3 T 2 + T 2 = 0 5310 - 180T + 3 \cdot \frac{T^2+T}{2} = 0 ;

or 3 2 T 2 357 2 T + 5310 = 0 ; \frac{3}{2}T^2 - \frac{357}{2}T + 5310 = 0;

or T 2 238 T + 3540 = ( T 59 ) ( T 60 ) = 0 T^2 - 238T + 3540 = (T-59)(T-60) = 0 ;

or T = 59 , 60. T = 59, 60.

Since 59 < 60 59 < 60 , he counts the entire amount in 30 + 59 = 89 30 + 59 = \boxed{89} minutes.
