Let a a and b b be you and your brother, respectively. We start with the system of equations b = 4 a b=4a b + 3 = 3 a + 9 b+3=3a+9 Using substitution 4 a = 3 a + 6 4a=3a+6 a = 6 \implies a=6 b = 4 ( 6 ) = 24 \implies b=4(6)=24 Let y y be the amount of years such that b + y = 2 ( a + y ) b+y=2(a+y) : 24 + y = 12 + 2 y 24+y=12+2y 12 = y \implies 12=y Therefore, the amount of years after those 3 years is y 3 = 12 3 = 9 y-3=12-3=\boxed{9} .
