There's no question of going backward. He falls directly in the manhole after taking 3 3 steps which is 3 3 metres away.

Even though I know that the answer is 3 and I got it correct, shouldn't you be standing on the edge of the manhole after 3 meters?

How do you know that he "stands" only at the Edge? Telling that he's "standing" at the edge is as much true as telling he's "fallen" from the edge... Well think about it...
