Who Will Shout First?

Logic Level 2

Four criminals are caught and are to be punished. The judge allows them to be freed if they can solve a puzzle. If they do not, they will be hanged. They agree.

The four criminals are lined up on some steps (shown in the picture). They are all facing in the same direction. A wall separates the fourth man from the other three.

So, to summarize:

  • Man 1 can see men 2 and 3.
  • Man 2 can see man 3.
  • Man 3 can see none of the others.
  • Man 4 can see none of the others.

The criminals are wearing hats, whose colors are depicted in the picture. They are told that there are two white hats and two black hats. The men initially do not know what color hat they are wearing. They are told to shout out the color of the hat that they are wearing as soon as they know for certain what color it is.

  • They are not allowed to turn around or move.
  • They are not allowed to talk to each other.
  • They are not allowed to take their hats off.

Who is the first person to shout out and why?

Relevant wiki: K-level thinking

If man 1 sees men 2 and 3 are wearing the same colour hats he would know the color of the hat he is wearing. For example, if man 1 see men 2 and 3 are wearing black hats, then he knows he can only be wearing white hat. Likewise, if he see men 2 and 3 are wearing white hats, he must be wearing a black hat. He does not shout because he sees men 2 and 3 are wearing different colour hats. Man 2 knows this fact -- that is men 2 and 3 are wearing different colour hats -- and he sees that man 3 is wearing black hat, he knows he is wearing white. Therefore, man 2 \boxed{\text{man 2}} is the first to shout.

@Oliver Hearn Man 2 knows this because if they did have the same colour hat, Man 1 would have shouted his colour.

I don't understand how Man 2 knows that men 2&3 have different colour hats

Man 2 knows man 1 is smart. If man 1 sees man 2 and man 3 are wearing black hat, then man 1 will shout he is wearing white. If man 1 sees the two men are wearing white then he will shout black. Since man 1 does not shout, man 2 knows that he and man 3 are wearing different color hat.

Just a small correction: "if man 1 see men 2 and 3 are wearing black hats, then he knows he can only be wearing WHITE hat".

The men number 3,4 can't deduct what hats they have. Number 1 sees one hat white and one hat black but don't know what hat he have Number 2 see only the person in front of him who wearing a black hat and can deduce that he wears a white hat because number 1 would shout first if he had seen two black hats.

You assumed color of hat on each prisoner by diagram. Isn't there a loss of generality?

Man 3 and 4 can't see anyone so rejected.

Now Man 1 should shout but he is uncertain of his hat colour seeing both black and white hats in front of him .

Man 2 sees a black hat in front of him and isn't hearing Man1 ,so he understands Man1's dilemma and understands that his hat colour is different from Man3 . Thus he shouts first.

Okay I get that 2 and 3 can figure out their hats. But how can 1 and 4 find out their hats?

It should be added that the criminals know what position they are in
