Why Did the Chicken Cross the River

Logic Level 1

An old man owns a small boat which can carry one possession of his plus himself at a time. The man owns a bag of seed, a chicken, and a cat. The chicken eats the seed and the cat eats the chicken, therefore you can not leave them together. The man is trying to get all three items across the river without losing any of his possessions. What does he take last?

The man takes the chicken first to leave the cat alone with the seed. The cat will not eat the seed. The man will then take the cat, but before he leaves, he will bring his chicken back with him and trade the chicken for the seed. After depositing the seed back with the cat on the shore he is headed for, he will return to the chicken and bring it across to be with all his possessions on the opposite shore

The only pairing that will result in no casualties is the cat with the seed. Hence, the chicken must be taken away first.

That's what I assumed, but the answer seems to differ.

Just to clarify, and maybe everyone was thinking this, but you take the chicken, leave the cat with the seed, and then have which ever choice you want next?

I'm hopeful the question was worded incorrectly, or something, because if not I'm clueless.
