Let the quantity of cheaper salt mixed be x
This problem can be solved by the rule of alligation
First of all, The selling price = 4/5*40=32 cents
By the rule of alligation, which says that
(Quantity of cheaper)/ (Quantity of cheaper) =
(CP of dearer - Mean price)/(Mean price-CP of cheaper)
Where mean price = 32 cents
CP of dearer = 42 cents
CP of cheaper= 24 cents
Which implies that
(42-32)/(32-24)= 25/x
5/4=25/x
Ans. x=20kg
