Why Log? Can't it be Wood?

Algebra Level 2

log ( x + 3 ) log ( x 3 ) = 1 \log (x+3) - \log (x-3)=1

Find the value of x x which satisfies the equation above.

Answer upto 3 decimal places.

We know that,

log x- log y = l o g x y log \dfrac{x}{y}

l o g x + 3 x 3 = 1 \rightarrow log \dfrac {x+3}{x-3}=1

But Can we Equate both LHS and RHS? No. Because, For Equating both sides, Both sides have to be in l o g log form.

1 can be expressed as l o g 10 log 10

Now, We can equate both sides

x + 3 = 10 ( x 3 ) x+3= 10 (x-3)

9 x = 33 9x=33

x = 11 3 = 3.667 x=\dfrac {11}{3}= 3.667

Note:- All logarithms here are common logarithms, i.e. Base 10.

Cheers!

log(x+3) - log(x-3)=1 log(x+3)/(x-3)=1 (x+3)/(x-3)=10 Solve x=33/9=3.66666666666666666666666 so on.. Round off 3.667
