If you had solid alcohol floating in water, when it melts, the level would drop, because water and alcohol mix at the molecular level; i.e. water filling spaces among alcohol molecules.

On my opinion this is incorrect because one can argue:

The floating solid alcohol has the same density like water. When it smelts the density will become lower connected with an increasing volume. This however means the level should increase. On the other hand the effect of mixing the two components does not play an important role here in contrast to the mixing (for example) water with sugar.
