  1. ADDITION: each three have 3 choices, add them together: 3+3+3=9

We add them together is because we need to choose one from 9 meals.

  1. MULTIPLICATION: we need to choose one from each staple food, snack and juice, so we need use multiplication: 3x2x3=18
