Remainder is synonymous to subtraction. So when you ask about the remainder to 2 numbers, you will simply find the difference between the given numbers. It will only mean division if the problem state any term that is used in division. Let's say for instance, "What is the remainder when you divide 100 by 50."

The statement "Remainder is synonymous to subtraction" is not completely true. You need to continue subtracting until it is strictly less than the dividend.

The remainder, when "100 is divided by 50" is 0.

The phrase "the remainder of 100 and 50" doesn't make sense.
