Work and Force

If a book is raised from the floor to the table, then the gravity force on the object or the weight of the object m g \vec{mg} is vertically downwards and the displacement s \vec{s} that is working vertically upwards.

True or false:

The force that you used to raise the object upwards will be a negative work \color{#D61F06}\text{negative work} for your applied force.

False \text{False} True \text{True}

If a book is raised from the floor to the table,

then the gravity force on the object or the weight of the object m g \vec{mg} is vertically downwards and

the displacement s \vec{s} that is working vertically upwards.

In this case, gravitational force and displacement are opposite directed.,

so for gravitational force, it will be a negative work \color{#D61F06}\text{negative work} .

Also, The force that you used to raise the object upwards will be a positive work \color{#20A900}\text{positive work} for your applied force.
