Sam ( S S ) owns three times as many marbles as Jenny ( J J ). Ed ( E E ) owns half as many marbles as Jenny. How many marbles ( M M ) do they own together?

3 J + J + 0.5 J = M 3J+J+0.5J=M E + S = J E+S=J J + 2.5 J = M J+2.5J=M 3 S + J + 0.5 E = M 3S+J+0.5E=M

Sam owns three times as many marbles as Jenny. S = 3 J S=3J

Ed owns half as many marbles as Jenny. 2 E = J 2E=J or E = 0.5 J E=0.5J

How many marbles do they own together? S + J + E = M S+J+E=M

Substituting so J J is the only variable results in 3 J + J + 0.5 J = M 3J+J+0.5J=M

This equation could be simplified to 4.5 J = M 4.5J=M . Without more information, it is impossible to know the total number of marbles any person has, but we can figure out the relative proportions.

"Sam ( S S ) owns three times as many marbles as Jenny ( J J )." S = 3 J \rightarrow S = 3J

"Ed ( E E ) owns half as many marbles as Jenny." E = 0.5 J \rightarrow E = 0.5J

"How many marbles ( M M ) do they own together?" S + J + E = M 3 J + J + 0.5 J = M \rightarrow S + J + E = M \rightarrow \boxed{3J + J + 0.5J = M}

Therefore, the answer is 3 J + J + 0.5 J = M 3J + J + 0.5J = M .
