X-alkanes

Chemistry Level 4

Define a class of organic compounds namely X \text{X} - alkanes - n n where X \text{X} is a functional group. Basically such compounds contain a straight chain alkane (i.e. with no branching ) with n + 2 n+2 carbon atoms and one of hydrogen atoms on each of carbons except the terminal ones are replaced by the X \text{X} functional group.

Therefore, Cl \text{Cl} - alkane - 2 2 is basically 2 , 3 2,3 - dichloro butane and OH \text{OH} - alkane - 3 3 is 2 , 3 , 4 2,3,4 - trihydroxy pentane.

Now, COOH \text{COOH} - alkane - N N is treated with excess AgNO 3 \text{AgNO}_3 to give 0.1 0.1 moles of a salt which gives about 54 g 54 \text{ g} of white coloured residue.

Estimate the molar weight of Br \text{Br} - alkane - N N in grams.

Details and Assumptions:

  • The molar weights of C \text{C} , H 2 \text{H}_2 , O 2 \text{O}_2 and Br 2 \text{Br}_2 are 12 , 2 , 32 12, 2, 32 and 160 160 grams, respectively.

The answer is 402.
