A perfect square can be 0 , 1 0,1 or 4 4 ( m o d 8 ) \pmod 8

So, the sum of 2 2 perfect squares will be 0 , 1 , 2 , 4 , 5 0,1,2,4,5 ( m o d 8 ) \pmod8

158 ( m o d 8 ) = 6 ( m o d 8 ) 158 \pmod 8=6 \pmod 8

158 \implies 158 cannot be the sum of 2 2 squares
