The area of the yellow region is equal to the sum of the areas of the three squares minus the sum of the areas of the four triangles. We have, 7 2 + 5 2 + 3 2 1 2 ( 15 7 + 7 2 + 5 2 + 3 3 ) = 14 7^2+5^2+3^2-\dfrac{1}{2}(15\cdot 7 + 7\cdot 2 + 5\cdot 2 + 3\cdot 3) = 14 .
