In a school two exams are taken every year. First of 30 marks and second of 70 marks. In the first exam you require 10 marks to pass and in the second exam 23 marks. To be promoted you have to pass in both the exams. The combined marks are announced. Without knowing the separate marks at what minimum marks can I be sure that I have been promoted?

Let's try to find the maximum number of marks one can get and not be promoted.
One can get at most 9 marks from the first exam to not pass it and thus if one fails the first exam, the maximum number of total marks is 9 + 7 0 = 7 9 .
One can get at most 2 2 marks from the second exam to not pass it and thus if one fails the second exam, the maximum number of total marks is 3 0 + 2 2 = 5 2 .
Hence, the maximum number of marks one can get and not be promoted is 7 9 , which means that the answer is 8 0 , since with 8 0 marks, promotion is quaranteed.
