If a gear rotates in a clockwise manner, then all its neighboring gear must rotates in a counterclockwise manner, and vice versa.

This is the only rule that all gear should follow in order for the system to function. Consider the image below,

Red and blue indicates two different direction of rotation. Since there are no two neighboring gears share the same color, all of them follows the rule! Hence we conclude that the gear system can work.

There are an even number of gears so it should work.

It doesnt depend on the Number of gears but rather their placement and connections
