You must have heard about Corundum!

Chemistry Level 2

On heating A l ( O H ) 3 Al(OH)_{3} at 45 0 o C 450^{o}C we get A l 2 O 3 Al_{2}O_{3} .

Based on the A l 2 O 3 Al_{2}O_{3} we obtained from the above reaction, check which of the following statement(s) is/are correct for it.

  1. It is unaffected by mineral acids.

  2. It is a very stable compound and it is unaffected by strong heating(even upto 1500 o C \boxed{1500}^{o}C ).

  3. It absorbs moisture and is used as a desiccant.

  4. It is used in chromatography due to its adsorbing qualities.

  5. It is extremely hard and is used as "jewellers rouge" to polish glass.

  6. It is highly porous in nature.

The compound formed in the above reaction is γ \gamma - A l 2 O 3 Al_{2}O_{3} .

  • Its a white porous compound, which dissolves in acids, absorbs moisture and is used in chromatography.

  • Upon strong heating it changes to a stable and extremely hard form known as Corundum(i.e - α A l 2 O 3 \alpha-Al_{2}O_{3} )
