Your Toothbrush Is Part Of The Problem

The world produces almost 345 Billion Kilograms of plastic waste throughout the year. Out of roughly 6 Billion people in the world, 4.2 Billion of them use toothbrushes, 2.5 toothbrushes yearly on average. After the end of two years , they would've thrown 5 toothbrushes, each being approximately 18 grams in weight.

What if, like we change the blades in our shavers, we changed the 'heads' of our toothbrushes on each renewal, so that once we brought a whole standardized 'body' , we buy just a head which is almost one-third the weight of the whole toothbrush (18 grams average).

Compared to the previous two years, what percentage of the total plastic waste would have been reduced by this? Do you consider it to be a big change, if so, why? what else can be renovated better to accommodate for eco and sustainable future, comment in explanations.

The answer is 0.0292174.

Before the introduction of the renewable heads , the percentage of the toothbrush waste among the total plastic waste after two years was approximately,

4.2 × 1 0 9 × ( 2.5 × 2 years ) × ( 18 1000 ) 345 × 1 0 9 × 2 years \Large \frac{ 4.2 × 10^9 × (2.5 × 2_{\text{years}}) × (\frac{18}{1000}) }{ 345 × 10^9 × 2_{\text{years}} } × 100 × 100

= 0.0547826 % = 0.0547826\%

After the end of two years, if everyone still uses 5 5 toothbrushes in two years, but buys body only on the first toothbrush and then just change heads 5 1 = 4 5-1 = 4 times, for the next two years, the percentage share of toothbrush plastic become,

[ 4.2 × 1 0 9 × 2 years × ( 1 ) × ( 18 1000 ) ] + [ 4.2 × 1 0 9 × 2 years ) × 4 × 1 3 × ( 18 1000 ) ] 345 × 1 0 9 × 2 years \Large \frac{ [4.2 × 10^9 × 2_{\text{years}} × (1) × (\frac{18}{1000})] + [4.2 × 10^9 × 2_{\text{years}}) × 4× \frac{1}{3} × (\frac{18}{1000})] }{ 345 × 10^9 × 2_{\text{years}} } × 100 × 100

= 0.0255652 % = 0.0255652\%

Reduction in percentage volume of the waste,

0.0547826 0.0255652 = 0.0292174 % 0.0547826 - 0.0255652 = \boxed{0.0292174\%}

That's 0.0292174 % 0.0292174\% of 2 × 345 × 1 0 9 2 × 345 × 10^9 kilograms. After the end of two years that's 2.016 2.016 Billion Kilograms of biennial plastic waste reduced.
