1/0= infinity (is it true)

we say that 1/0 =infinity, which can be written as 1/0=infinity/1, if we cross multiply we can get, 11= infinity0, which is 1=0

?????????????????????

am i right

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Comments

Infinity is a concept, not a number like 1 or 2. Hence ×00\infty \times 0 \neq 0. Also, 00 cannot be cross multiplied as you did in your argument. Hence 101\neq 0

exactly ..n in ur language harsh....u may undrstnd it by an eg - If space is infinite it means that there is no end. and accordin to me it's a subtle difference, 1 / infinity is undefined (because infinity is not a single number)

you mean single number as real number. Right ?

I learnt this proof in Pseudo Maths : function is lim x->0 f(x)=1/x when the value of x approaches to 0 from positive, x=1, f(x)=1

x=0.1, f(x)=10

x=0.01, f(x)=100

x=0.001, f(x)=1000

when x=0, f(x)=∞

However, if the value of x approaches 0 from negative, x=-1, f(x)=-1

x=-0.1, f(x)=-10

x=-0.01, f(x)=-100

x=-0.001, f(x)=-1000

when x=0, f(x)=-∞

∞ and -∞ is completely different, so the limit is undefined.

infinity is not a number it is a repersention of a number which we dont know
