2014 National MathCounts

Note: I was not at the competition myself. :(

Just recently, the National MathCounts happened(Friday, May 9th). After an exciting few hours, a champion was crowned. I'd like to congratulate Swapnil Garg for being the first Californian to win MathCounts with this question.

In addition, the California team won first for the third time in five years. Their coach was David Vaughn, who I'm happy to say is the coach of my school. In fact, I was on the team that sent him to Nationals, but Northern California had too many good people.

Congratulations to these people for winning MathCounts!

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Great disappointment for Washington State team, we didn't even get into top 10, an all-time low for quite a few years. Unfortunately, this year is the year I graduate from Mathcounts, so I cannot redeem myself :(

Congrats to Swapnil Garg!

You were on the Washington State team? Did you get to know Ashwin Sah from last year?

Making Nationals is already a great thing, I got the highest score for a 7th grader in Southern California this year, but there were around 20 Northern Californian 7th and 6th graders that beat me(that I still have to face next year). Great job for even being there!

Yea, I was on the Washington State team this year and last year. Least year we were so much better, this year everyone kinda just derped up. @Colin Tang got 4th place individual, but derped up countdown and went to 7th. I derped up Sprint and got 22nd. The other two people derped and didn't make top 56. We derped team and got 6/10. So all in all, bad year.

@Daniel Liu Wait did you get 22nd on the whole written part or just the Sprint round? What was your overall score? Tell me numbers! :D

@Finn Hulse I got 22nd place. I got 8 wrong on Sprint (the part I derped), and got perfect on Target.
