2018 AMC 10/12 Discussion Thread

UPDATE: Instead of creating a separate thread for the AMC 10/12B, I'm making this thread into the general AMC 10/12 discussion thread for both the A and the B. Feel free to discuss anything about these exams!

AMC 12A problems: link.

AMC 12B problems: link.

For those of you unfamiliar with the AMCs, here's the official AMC website, and here's a compilation of past AMC problems from Art of Problem Solving.

  Easy Math Editor

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Comments

For those of you curious about my performance (assuming AoPS is correct):

12A - 121.5

12B - 132 (yay!)

I thought the 12B was a tad bit more difficult than the 12A mainly because there were fewer "deceptively hard" problems in the last five, but I don't expect MAA to create separate USAMO cutoff for the two tests like they did last year. What did you guys think of the problems?

Dude you destroyed the cutoff. Like took it and then smashed it into a million pieces.

@Steven Yuan I don't think I did pretty well. Any advice for a better score?

Hmm, what specifically are you struggling with?

Number Theory, Combinatorics, Probability, and polynomials.

@Kevin Tran All right, lemme see...

A good resource for contest preparation is Art of Problem Solving's Volume 1 and 2 books, which cover nearly every topic you need for the AMCs and other contests, including the ones you mentioned. I'd also suggest taking practice and mock tests, both to familiarize yourself with the type of problems and to practice time-management for the actual exam (time is a big factor on the AMC 10/12). Finally, practice all the time, whether it is on Brilliant or AoPS or other resources - the best way to develop problem-solving skills is to solve a lot of problems.

I hope this helps!

@Steven Yuan Thank you, your advice really boast my motivation to study more. Good luck on taking the AIME in March.
