A big blunder on Brilliant Website (Challenges)

Main post link -> https://brilliant.org/assessment/s/algebra-and-number-theory/2045924/

I have noticed a very big blunder in the number and theory challenges section, the question for 100 marks appears to be of 125 marks after clicking on it and for the 2 questions for 125 marks the brilliant org just awarded me 100 marks each and they awarded me 125 marks instead of 160 marks for the question(solving a quartic sum).

In geometry and combinatorics problem section they are awarding me 40 marks for the first question which is of 55 marks and the third question is appearing to be of 160 marks instead of 100 marks and 6th question is appearing of 125 marks instead of 160 marks and 7th question is appearing of 180 marks instead of 160 marks.................

I want brilliant staff to fix it as soon as possible as it is costing me my precious points and my hard work.............

PLEASE HELP ME BRILLIANT AND FIX THIS BUG AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Hello,

There is no blunder. We are experimenting with a new system whereby a problem's difficulty rating changes throughout the week depending on how people on Brilliant perform on it. The problems whose point value increased were ones that an abnormal number of people are struggling with this week and thus are harder than we thought they were. The ones that have become worth less points are ones that an abnormal number of people are getting right, and are thus easier than we thought they were.

Will those changes also be retrospective? For instance, if i solve a 300 point problem, and 1000 people solve it after, will I be 'docked' points? Also, if the problem proves to be one that only a minute handful can solve, will i be given points when the rescaling is done?

In this current experiment, it is not retroactive. In the sense that you get the points that were promised when you attempted the problem . This weeks experiment is really crude and the product of us noticing early in the week that the performance statistics of some of our problems were absurd in either direction. Note, the number of total points a person could attain in a level has remained the same even with the changes.

I like it. Good idea. This way one would really be rewarded for solving a hard problem. I hope it works well.

I like this change very much. One person(who happens to be the one who proposed the problem) judging the difficulty of a problem is never better than a cumulative result based on performance of various users. Since Brilliant now has lots of users, extreme cases wouldn't occur (like if a problem is known to a certain group of users, still its worth won't drastically go down). Also it is a good way to counter cheating. If a problem has been posted somewhere else on the Web (most common being AoPS, YahooAnswers, Quora and an unknown site called Jiksha) and many people fet access to its solution, its worth would go down.

I am having the same problem . Please look into this BRILLIANT...............................

Anshul, I am trying to fully understand the problem you have experienced. Are you saying that the problem shows different point values on the home page versus the problem page itself, or that the problem shows a consistent point value on the screen, but upon completion awards a different number of points? Or do you mean that in prior weeks you have seen the 7th question as being 160 points, and this week it is a different number of points, for instance?
