This is a suggestion to the Brilliant team. There is only one thing which Brilliant lacks now, it is a BIOME - Brilliant International Online Maths Examination
It is a kind request to the brilliant staff to start such a initiative.
NOTE: This note is a very old one, much older than Proofathon and JOMO.

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

Running an event as a global math competition for all aptitudes is definitely within the vision of Brilliant, but is not within our immediate priorities.
We would love to throw a math competition on Brilliant that would grant a shared experience of the same problems across the globe. Unlike most competitions where your ability to participate is strongly correlated with socio-economic privilege, aptitude, and your own logistical availability; Brilliant offers flexibility, accessibility, better conversation, and hopefully better problems.
There are many considerations that would prevent us from throwing a "global math competition" prematurely. I would be curious if you all have thoughts on them:
It is our belief that almost every culture on Earth is over-saturated with tests and competitions. We would be deeply ashamed to throw something that was just another list of math problems. If the result of an exam is a list of people ranked by whether they got the right answers, then it is probably too boring. We already grant that in our river of daily problems. When we are completely sure we could throw a math competition that was way more fun than what is available in real life, then we will start planning on it. There are many options to make a conventional "math exam" more fun we just need to spend more time thinking about what they would be.
We are a small and vigorous company that prioritizes it's development time ruthlessly. A general principle that guides our engineering prioritization, is that we should not build features for ourselves that are not available to our members. Meaning, instead of investing our time optimizing for the ability for us to throw global competitions on Brilliant, we would prefer to build the capability for anyone to throw competitions on Brilliant. The exciting frontier of "Global Competitions" on Brilliant, probably isn't the ones we could throw but in enabling anyone on Earth to organize competitions and events of any scale hosted within Brilliant.

Brilliant sponsors Proofathon.org! And the staff is all from Brilliant.org, so what's keeping anyone from calling Proofathon the BIOME?

@Cody Johnson This note was created before the birth of Proofathon and JOMO, but still, more of them will be even better!

peter,
your thinking is as reasonable and just as it is. We are surrounded by tests. No offense, but in India, there is no option to learn higher level mathematics except your website and many other good ones. the schools do not want to teach it, and only the private coaching take it up for hefty fees. now, you can't learn complex things on your own if no one explains you(at least for me, i know there are exceptions). And i am related to the govt. jobs, which means transfers every year or two to a remote place where there are not proper schools, leave alone complex maths. therefore, instead of creating more tests and competitions, i would rather suggest you to publish some lessons on complex maths and physics so that people like me can benefit. if they are present already on your site, please inform where they are.
Hello Peter!
Thank you for sparing your time to reply. Well, I agree to your considerations, but it is my belief that without a test, we cannot judge ourselves, that is, in which topic are we lacking and need more practice.
And as for your second consideration, well, the questions in the examinations are ought to be given by examiners.
Also, nothing on Brilliant can be boring! Still, as I said, its a suggestion, and thanks again for considering it.

Right now, there are level diagnostic tests for each topic, but you can only take them once and they don't tell you if you make any improvement.
Perhaps a function where someone can post an examination could be introduced? It would be fun to try setting a test on our own!
Agree, it would be boring if the competition will just be solving. Maybe Brilliant can host events such as the MEoW(Mathematical Equation of the Week) which was already started or maybe like create poems concerning math. Then maybe add some prizes(points?) and my favorite - badges.
Time limited question will make our everyday experience like that of BIOME
Log in to reply
Yeah, that'd be nice.
I love this idea.
How hard would the questions be? Personally, I'd recommend problems ranging from high Level 3 to mid Level 5, kind of like the AMC, but maybe a little harder.
Well, Trevor, in my opinion, every user should get questions corresponding to his or her level. Please re-share.
I agree.
No, because then the scores would be unfair. Like a 5th grader could get a perfect 100% on a bunch of easy problems, but an 11th grader only gets a 80% on really tough problems.

I think there should be a physics one too
Log in to reply
It can be BIOPE !!
If this were to get started, I think many people would participate (including myself), since it is similar to IMO and IPhO in the fact that you are competing against other people around the world, which is pretty cool if you think about it.
That's a great idea! :) But how do we cater the competition to various levels of Brilliantian so that everyone can enjoy it?
Everybody can get questions on his or her level in different levels.
in my opinion. for some reason, the "Everybody can get questions on his/her level in different levels" part is a bit hard. How about they leveled down, just only because they want to take the easier problems ?
besides, it supposed to be fun. to avoid extra cheaters, we should submit the answer by LaTeX, or scan your worksheets. just like proofathon.
It will be their loss, then, because they will then have to level up again afterwards. Also, We don't demand any prizes for the test.
Ah, then that would be difficult. Because unless a whole new section is set up, then we assume that you will have to stick to "Post a Problem" which obviously isn't that good for a competition of any sort (unless you get auto timers or something). And of course there are always the cheaters who use multi accounts. So right now, I would say it's a little hard.
gr8...why i never thought of this?? there must be an online test
'Brilliant' idea! :D

Thanks Simon!
There was already something like that, it was the 2012 Fall Global challenge.

Please tell me more about it.
THAT'S A SUPERB IDEA............ I think the exam should be taken in two parts.... one for level 1 to level3 and the other will be for level 4 and 5.....
Hi , I'm not sure if this is the right place to comment , but can you start an Integration contest to be held on Brilliant itself ? I am asking this to you since I believe you , @Krishna Ar , @Daniel Liu , you guys can do it together instead of burdening the Brilliant staff .
It's just a suggestion , please think about it .
Thanks :D
P.S. Create a message board already! And ask Krishna to do so too , since he'll pay heed to you more than anyone else :)
:D . I guess Daniel Liu has already done it with Proofathon. Aditya Raut too has his own math series called the JOMO :)
But none of those feature Calc questions! And what abt the message board :P ?

Calculus Contest.
Proofathon does feature a separate@Azhaghu Roopesh M @Krishna Ar Firstly, for an "Integration Contest", I'm the wrong person to contact, because I don't know any Calculus. You could contact Partha Lohomi, he once told me he knows around 8-9 different types of integrations.
Ok , @Parth Lohomi
Do you have any plans regarding any Calc based contest ? Seeing that none of the members of the 17 year old club can help right now , how about you guys from the 13-15 yo club ?
I AGREE WID THE QUETION.
Can I help make problems for BIOME?
Presently, BIOME is nothing. It was a request to the staff to start it.

I think we should wait for staff's reply and then decide whether to climb the stairs or not . May be , they also face some constrain about this decision. Let's see what happens.
