This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

My Resolution for this year is to understand the statement " The only resolution I make is to make no resolutions"

Ronak Agarwal - 5 years, 5 months ago

In my case lesser the no. of resolutions, more the probability of fulfilling them. So I've got just one:  Making 2016 an Adventurous Year.\text{ Making 2016 an Adventurous Year.}

Sandeep Bhardwaj - 5 years, 5 months ago

How would you make this year adventurous?

Swapnil Das - 5 years, 5 months ago

For now what I've in mind is: Mixed Martial Arts, Bicycle stunts, Body Physique, Dance, Guitar(if time permits).

Along with the above, recording and uploading videos of JEE, higher Maths lectures and all the adventures above at youtube channel or something.

@Sandeep Bhardwaj Great, got a lot inspired.

Swapnil Das - 5 years, 5 months ago

These were the New year resolutions of GH Hardy:

  • To prove the Riemann hypothesis,

  • To make a brilliant play in a crucial cricket match,

  • To prove the nonexistence of God,

  • To be the first man atop Mount Everest,

  • To be proclaimed the first president of the U.S.S.R., Great Britain, and Germany, and

  • To murder Mussolini.

Swapnil Das - 5 years, 5 months ago

Who's Mussolini? And why he wanted to murder him?

Rohit Udaiwal - 5 years, 5 months ago

1920s Italian Benito Mussolini, who has recently been reincarnated as Donald Trump

Michael Mendrin - 5 years, 5 months ago

@Michael Mendrin @Michael Mendrin Evertime I hear or see a statement from Donald Trump I wonder how he comes up with the things he does. Never ceases to surprise me. How is he even leading the polls ?

A Former Brilliant Member - 5 years, 5 months ago

@A Former Brilliant Member He is leading in the polls because this is America. Where else would we find so many Americans believe that the US Constitution says that there shall be no laws that the Federal Government can impose on Americans?

Michael Mendrin - 4 years, 11 months ago

@Michael Mendrin It really is unfortunate that our country's citizens have become people of such blatant ignorance. I do believe it has to do with the education system. Check out Conrad Wolfram's video to see what I mean.

Sal Gard - 4 years, 11 months ago

@Sal Gard There's probably a number of reasons why ignorance has become epidemic in America (a recent test says over 20% of Americans believe that the sun goes around Earth), but I think one major driver is the explosion of media, including the internet, so that people become habituated to only a certain few sources that "confirm" their ignorant beliefs, instead of being challenged. As an analogy, because of GPS, people are rapidly losing their natural sense of direction, so that without GPS, they get lost easily.

Michael Mendrin - 4 years, 11 months ago

@Michael Mendrin I am completely agreeing with you. With rapid modernization comes the loss of important skills, for example mathematics. I get tired of the media, especially channels that probably became pro-Trump because of bribery and patronage (such as fox news). People continue to believe what Trump says because of horrific internal problems. This somewhat reminds me of how Hitler came to power.

Sal Gard - 4 years, 11 months ago

@Sal Gard While we can see strong parallels between the rise of Adolf Hitler and of Donald Trump, the major difference is that Hitler never did try selling a line of steaks while he was the Chancellor. Trump has already openly bragged about using the Oval Office to further his business ventures.

Michael Mendrin - 4 years, 11 months ago

@Michael Mendrin Hahahaha. That is quite funny. And quite unfortunate.

Sal Gard - 4 years, 11 months ago

It's last in the last. So I guess that Hardy would not have reached to this one. :P

@Sandeep Bhardwaj Hehehe

Rohit Udaiwal - 5 years, 5 months ago

He was a political leader, no idea why he wanted to do so.

Swapnil Das - 5 years, 5 months ago

1) I will spend a night camping in the Ocala National Forest. I will see a 14 ft. alligator. I will wrestle it and this time there will be no referees to save it.

2) I will encounter Bigfoot. I will pursue it. I will capture it and haul its smelly carcass back to civilization.

3) I will solve a math problem that I have not been able to solve for a long time.

4) I will invent transparent soap and I will deliver it to Agnishom.
