A Protest

PLEASE revert the interface back to what it was yesterday. This seems just unnecessary. I really do not understand why everything seems to be getting more complicated than it needs to be. This is just TOO much.

  Easy Math Editor

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Comments

Here are my two major concerns:

  • The big white bar is unnecessary and it reduces the screen size quite a lot (for some reason, it irritates me).

  • The "Join Brilliant2^2" option has been increased in font size and made to look more prominent on the homepage of those who aren't B2B^2 members. This saddens me because I don't have money to upgrade. Is Brilliant staff picking on poor people now? I cri everytim.

Added Request to the staff: Could you make the lifetime B2B^2 offer available at 500 INR (or something around that) anytime soon?

Funny thing I was about to make a similar post. Without protest.

@Steven Zheng -- what do you mean by "without protest"?

I think he meant "without the protest symbol" (the hand symbol in the note).

Prasun Biswas - 6 years ago

@Prasun Biswas @Steven Zheng is that correct?

Silas Hundt Staff - 6 years ago

Same here . But I decided against it since the staff is just experimenting the way the interface looks , so I thought I'll let them know after a week or so .

And yes , it's been a long time since I last talked with you . How are you ?

The last to last theme actually made more sense than any of these two

  • The dark theme was better
  • We do not need two bars here. Please merge them
  • How about you have the post button on the bars?

The notifications and the home page got better though.

.

The dark theme was better

Noted. Will think about this more.

We do not need two bars here. Please merge them

Noted. As I mentioned below, we have some ideas for how to improve this. Here's a concept:

How about you have the post button on the bars?

Thinking about it. Just want it to be as simple as possible.

The notifications and the home page got better though.

I think so too! (Not everyone agrees though /cc John Muradeli ;)) The hard (and fun) part of making something for a lot of people is being careful about your assumptions. Always surprised to hear what people like and don't like.

No offense , but since you are gathering view I just wanted to present my POV .

I joined B'ant in December last year , and I feel that the B'ant interface that was present in Jan-Feb was the BEST ! I will simply love to go back in time to use the previous one . \stackrel{{\Large\wedge\,\wedge}}{{\Large\smile}}

Also I like more black on my screen. To much white is hard on the eyes.

Steven Zheng - 6 years ago

Is there an option to select dark mode on the app?

Live Lindberg - 4 months, 2 weeks ago

What I found funny was that the notifications were in PINK!! . And the notifications were merged with my profile pic , so if I click on wither of them , the other one get's opened by default . TBH , I found it a bit irritating .

Swapnil Das - 6 years ago

Hey @John Muradeli -- thanks for the feedback.

Could you explain a little about what feels more complicated about Brilliant now? We actually thought we were making it simpler!

Silas Hundt Staff - 6 years ago

Surely.

  • The icons made things easier to access. Now everything is awkwardly clumped into my profile picture, and on a small screen, this can create problems.

  • The stalking bar is now more prominent than before - its white color is unavoidable.

  • Everything is on the whiter side now. The dark theme was easier on the eyes.

  • There is just a large empty space between the Brilliant logo and my profile picture. For what? Why not just Insert the "Home, Topics, Stats," and "Community" tabs in-between along with the notifications icon? There's an entire extra unnecessary bar under a bigger unnecessary bar to include those links.

  • The combined bars take up 20% of my screen space - all the time. Let's just agree that this isn't the best there can be.

  • The previous home screen was more informative. I like the "problem of the day" idea, sure, but I feel like it could've been under the "suggested" tab or a tab of its own on the home screen just fine.

Maybe "complicated" isn't exactly the right word to use, but "unnecessary" surely is. Well, that's what I think. Of course I won't stop using Brilliant because of this, but I probably will use it less because I feel too uncomfortable to use it often for reasons stated above.

Thank you for your consideration.

Thanks a lot for your time, @John Muradeli

The icons made things easier to access. Now everything is awkwardly clumped into my profile picture, and on a small screen, this can create problems.

Noted. We are trying to simplify the number of widgets that users have to look at all the time.

The stalking bar is now more prominent than before - its white color is unavoidable.

What do you mean by the stalking bar?

Everything is on the whiter side now. The dark theme was easier on the eyes.

Fair.

There is just a large empty space between the Brilliant logo and my profile picture. For what? Why not just Insert the "Home, Topics, Stats," and "Community" tabs in-between along with the notifications icon? There's an entire extra unnecessary bar under a bigger unnecessary bar to include those links.

The combined bars take up 20% of my screen space - all the time. Let's just agree that this isn't the best there can be.

Totally agree. Fixes are coming to this in the next day and then again in a week or two.

The previous home screen was more informative. I like the "problem of the day" idea, sure, but I feel like it could've been under the "suggested" tab or a tab of its own on the home screen just fine.

Excellent feedback. Note that Brilliant members have leveled this complaint at us every single time we change the homepage ;) Give it a few days to sink in.

@Silas Hundt I'm just wondering where the "Started Problems" option disappeared to; I found that one quite useful.

Also, just to pile it on, I'm not crazy about the new homepage. I looked through the "questions of the day" and now I'm stuck in perpetual gif mode which, while amusing, is not very informative. I preferred the previous version, (harumpf.... :) ). If I was able to flip back through the questions of the day at will then I might warm up to the new version .... eventually.

P.S.. These are just picky suggestions; the site is still amazing, and I appreciate how responsive staff have been to feedback I and other members have provided over time. :)

@Brian Charlesworth @Brian Charlesworth

Regarding "Started Problems" -- understood. We'll take that into consideration. It is worth noting that for B^2 members can see a list of problems they've done on their Stats page.

Regarding nothing to do after completing problems of the day -- note that the old homepage was (essentially) the top 6 problems in your feed, laid out in a grid -- and the feed still exists! For the new "problems of the day" feature, we select the 3 problems we think you'll like most out of the entire catalogue of Brilliant problems based on all problems you've done in the past.

Silas Hundt Staff - 6 years ago

@Silas Hundt Thanks for replying. I was about to ask you where the "grid" homepage feed exists when I stumbled upon the mobile feed option. Wow! It's like I discovered a parallel universe! I found the (new) grid of 6 problems, the "Started problems" options and more. So now I can flip between universes depending on what I want to do and how I want pages presented. I'll be curious to see how things evolve, but for now I've adapted to the changes. Thanks again. :)

Brian Charlesworth - 6 years ago

@Silas Hundt The best response from a staff member ever. Kudos.

Well I surely do like that you try out new things and listen to feedback. Reminds me of evolution.

Hope things will get better. And I know they will :)

Cheers

Abhijeet Verma - 6 years ago

According to me the grey bar is still ok .. but the white bar seems incomplete . A black bar would look fine :) :)

Abhishek Chakraborty - 6 years ago

Hello Silas Hundt , I would like to give my feedback regarding the new interface.

  • I like the white bar and the blue text on it looks amazing!
  • I skipped some of the problems of the day, is there a way to get them back on the home page?
  • I liked the new like, reshare, and save to set buttons.
  • In the Stats section on the homepage, the lightning, the star and the tick mark are all looking blurred. Using vector graphics should solve the problem.
  • Now that the profile pic is bigger, it looks blurred; even though I have uploaded a high res image.

Is there an official forum where we can report bugs, give feedback and suggestions for the website and app?

Thanks.

Pranshu Gaba - 6 years ago

I find it easier to learn at night, therefore I'd appreciate dark mode to make it easy for my eyes, a big 27' white screen at 2 am is way too much for my eyes

@John Muradeli , I salute you man. I had the same idea. The previous interface was way better. I request the Brilliant staff to revert back to the previous interface.

Mehul Arora - 6 years ago

Maybe it's just me, but I still think Brilliant.org needs to work on their logo some more. It doesn't look right, it lacks that "snap of mathematical correctness". It looks a bit klutzy. The curves should be smooth and angles correct. Get someone with good math/geometry software to fix it up!

All right, all right, maybe it's just me.

Michael Mendrin - 6 years ago

Here's an accurate one. How about we take the whole thing and... blow it to smithereens?

And then reconstruct two 3D logos from it? The Banach-Tarski fan boys will go crazy! :P

Łukasz Dzik - 6 years ago

Really nice graphics, very sharp too. What software did you use for that one?

I wish Brilliant.org takes the hint and consider upgrading their logo. You've proven it can be done.

Michael Mendrin - 5 years, 12 months ago

I suppose by klutzy you mean a ball that has been punctured :P

Yeah, it looks like a spiked soccer ball. But, no, really, it's a great logo, it just needs polish work. I look at it, and I see all kinds of problems with it, the arcs aren't quite smooth, angles are off, the spacing is wrong, etc. It was done by hand. This is supposed to be the flagship logo of a brilliant community of mathematicians, using exactly drawn geometrical figures...? It's like having a dodecahedron for a logo, but we see that one of the faces has six sides.

Edit: Here's the current logo, enlarged

Michael Mendrin - 6 years ago

@Michael Mendrin I challenge you both to draft a better one that scales legibly from 16 x 16 pixels up to 1028 x 1028 pixels and looks great on high and low resolution screens!

Silas Hundt Staff - 6 years ago

@Silas Hundt Silas, on a lark, in one of my posted problems, I wanted to see if I could duplicate the Brilliant.org logo used back then, but in more accurate mathematical form. I'm not saying that this is the best representation of it, but at least it shows what might be possible. The addition of the thick white rim to get the same effect was a major headache for me.

Here's the 16 x 16 pixel version of the same. If you squint really hard at it, you might make out the Brilliant.org logo. Or maybe you might make out Napoleon's face.

Michael Mendrin - 6 years ago

@Michael Mendrin Nice work! Can you make the 16 x 16 one actually 16 x 16 rather than 100 x 94? This is a requirement for the "favicons" in browser tabs.

Silas Hundt Staff - 6 years ago

@Silas Hundt Here are two 16 x 16 versions you can use for a favicon, with black and white backgrounds. I think it's sort of recognizable as the Brilliant.org logo at that size. But of course, things like both the 1028 x 1028 and the 16 x 16, as well as their negatives, can be independently adjusted. Remember, this one I'm showing right now is a take-off of the other Brilliant. org logo, it doesn't have to be exactly that way.

Because of the way the Brilliant.org has 3 major vertices arranged, it sort of looks like a face, when it's very small.

Michael Mendrin - 6 years ago

@Michael Mendrin Oh right! Btw , the Brilliant Logo that you have posted below , looks better since the lines are thicker , just my opinion .

@A Former Brilliant Member Azhaghu, this logo I put together is a direct rip-off of the original Brilliant.org logo, with slight modifications. I made it for a problem, Brilliant Logo Triangles, that I posted a while back. Check out the differences between the 2 logos. For this problem, I wanted and needed for it to be mathematically accurate, or else there could be trouble.

Michael Mendrin - 6 years ago

@Michael Mendrin Yup! I can see the difference . Btw , is this the real inspiration behind the B'ant logo ?

I had bookmarked that link long ago , I don't remember how I got it .

The previous interface was obviously better. The new one doesn't have any major problem though, only the merging of notification and profile. There's no problem with the colour as white denotes peace.
