A WALK TO REMEMBER

Not so long ago, i was just like an ordinary kid in India- one for whom math was like a nightmare. Things never appealed and clicked to me as they do now. Being in a non-competitive atmosphere, and studying in a culture where only rote learning is fostered and the focus is only "more marks", i never realized the beauty of mathematics, and subsequently loathed it. It was about a couple of years ago, when i came to know the charm of mathematics- simple but yet complex. My inspiration was my math teacher at my coaching institute - the way he approached the problems, the way he explored the minute details, just made me fall in love with the subject. Gradually i began to work out more and more number of problems, and developed a bit of aptitude for the math. About a month ago, when i joined brilliant, i was kind of elated to see so huge number of talented and extraordinary people, working out the toughest of problems, and eager to teach others.

I must admit that brilliant has made me understand the true meaning of mathematics. I am not one of the extraordinary minds that solve those profound problems with a flair of elegance, but i know that i have learnt a lot from the people on this site.............!!!

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

I would like to ask you something..... Now that you have started loving maths, would you be taking it up as a subject for your further studies, or would you be doing engineering and go back to doing what an ordinary kid does in India after the twelfth grade? Maths gets even better the higher you go, believe me.... And I would love to see more people coming into this field... :) and yeah..... 'Brilliant' is brilliant!!!!!

I KNOW THAT CHARM OF MATH INCREASES WITH EACH LEVEL. I HAVE GONE THROUGH A BIT OF ADVANCE LEVEL MATHEMATICS AND I LOVED IT. BUT SADLY, I HAVE TO DO MY GRADUATION IN ENGINEERING. BUT, I THINK THAT I WILL ENJOY MY ENGINEERING TOO, AS I INTEND TO DO COMPUTER ENGINEERING, WHICH I THINK, HAS A LOT TO DO WITH MATH. BUT, GRADUATION WON'T BE MY LAST DESTINATION. THIS IS THE BEST PART NOW- I WILL, AFTER MY ENGINEERING IS FINISHED, WILL GO TO ONE OF THOSE IVY LEAGUE UNIVERSITIES, AND DO A RESEARCH IN PHYSICS AND MATHEMATICS. THATS COOL... ISN'T IT???
