This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science
related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should
explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments
should further the discussion of math and science.
When posting on Brilliant:
Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

You must be eligible to enroll at the university of Waterloo next fall. For most people, that will be 17 years old, although there may be people both younger and older who are eligible.
When you use the term eligible to enroll, could you please list the criteria that makes one eligible to enroll? Is higher secondary schooling necessary here? @Peter Taylor@Suyeon Khim
@Agnishom Chattopadhyay
–
Hi Agnishom -- generally, students are expected to complete high school or an equivalent education before enrolling at the University of Waterloo. By "eligible to enroll," we simply mean that you must be planning to enter the first year of an undergraduate degree program in 2015 (so if you're already attending a university, you would not be eligible).
@Suyeon Khim
–
Hey, Suyeon. I really want this question answered.
When we apply to UW, we also submit an AIF (Admissions Information Form), and the deadline for that for Engineering is 6 February. But Brilliant requires us to apply after 15 Feb after selection.
Would we be able to submit the AIF later? It's kind of urgent.
Thanks
@Suyeon Khim

I've applied for the scholarship; I sent an email. But I haven't received a confirmation email or something similar. I just wanted to that know my application has been put into the 'to be considered' pile.
@Gursimran Pannu
–
Yes, I sent my application through email as well. I haven't received any confirmation, but my friend who submitted the essay on her profile got a confirmation email. I just wanted to know if my application was received. Thanks.
@Agnishom Chattopadhyay

Hi Agnishom – yes, you must be eligible to enter the first year of an undergraduate degree program in Engineering at the University of Waterloo. If you're the frontrunner for the scholarship and you don't meet the English language requirement, we can provide support to help you complete it.
Please post the names of the finalists in each round on brilliant. Not only by sending them emails. So that we know who are the brilliant people getting near to a brilliant scholarship.
A transcript is an official record of your academic performance (grades) from the schools you have attended. For the purposes of this application attaching a photo or pdf of whatever documentation from your school is easiest will work for us.
There is no pre-conceived expectation of "a project" for this scholarship application. We assume that
something you learned or a project you worked on outside of classes and homework.
will vary immensely depending on where people are, and what opportunities they have had. We are mostly interested in hearing about how you have demonstrated the initiative to pursue your passions and ambitions.
Thank you for the response. On another note, I am a junior in high-school, but short only an English credit for graduation in my state. Will this scholarship be potentially available in the future, i.e. next year? Or is this a one time only kind of promotion? If not, would you recommend that I apply anyways and complete my last course in English over the summer? I would appreciate your response. With thanks - Seth.
@Seth Lovelace
–
Hi Seth, if you want to graduate high school over the summer and enter college in the fall of 2015, you meet the criteria for the scholarship. However, keep in mind that your application will be considered alongside those of high school seniors.
This scholarship will likely be available again next year, but the world is a fickle place so we make no guarantees :)
Is it okay to apply for someone who graduated in an engineering school? like in my case, an ECE, electronics engineer. Want to learn more about my course.
Hello unfortunately, this scholarship is only open students entering a University for the first time and is not available for people pursuing transfer, post-bac, or graduate studies.
I really want to be an engineer. And i have to apply for this scholarship. Aside from making an essay what are the other requirements? I'm a freshman but if given a chance i would really want to have this scholarship. I've been loving math since i was a kid.
Hi Gabrielle, just tell us as much as you can about why you deserve the scholarship! Focus on your achievements – what you have actually done, rather than what you aspire to do. Send us the best essay that you can write, your high school transcript, and don't be afraid to brag about anything else you're proud of.
This is a very important follow up to the question posed by Colita and answered by Peter considering the question of "transfer" vs "apply" for residents of the province of Quebec.
Since you're in the US, I will try my best to concisely explain the difference between French Canada and Anglo Canada.
To my (possibly narrow) understanding, all of the courses offered in CEGEP for science students are university-level classes for Anglo Canadian and US standards, or at least all the science and math courses are.
However, when one finishes his two or three years of CEGEP, one applies to any university in Canada, not only in Quebec. Many of my friends applied to out-of-Quebec universities.
Ok, so here are my questions:
Given that I technically could have applied to an out-of-Quebec Canadian university right out of secondary school without going through CEGEP (I know this is possible because my CEGEP English teacher did it to her daughters), does the fact that I am currently in CEGEP mean that I will be transferring to Waterloo, or applying (Which I was going to do anyway since it's my first choice university) to it? In other words, am I eligible for the scholarship if I am currently in CEGEP?
If I am eligible, do I include my grades for CEGEP as well in high school transcript, or can I just include them in the "Optional" section?
And talking about the "Optional" section, what is it exactly? Do I include it with my high school transcript email to scholarships@brilliant.org? And what is "Free Response"?
Given the fact that at the moment, my sole interests are abstract mathematics and to a lower degree, programming, is it going to hurt my chances that I'm not terribly interested in the 'sciences' at the moment, and that this is a scholarship for an engineering degree, not mathematics? In other words, is it really expected of me to write about my "achievements" in subjects like physics and chemistry as well, or just mathematics and computer science?
If I include a recommendation letter from a CEGEP mathematics professor (who all have Ph.D's in math) in the "Optional" section, how valuable will that be, if at all? I don't have one yet, but if it's valuable, I can try my best to get one.
Same thing as above for my math.stackexchange profile. How valuable is the information in there to the committee?
Third question about the value of an "asset". How valuable are non-sciency things/skills in this application? For example, is being a tetraglot going to affect my application in any way however minor, or is it just a fun little additional tidbit of info that isn't worth anything?
Is there a way to verify my claim to knowledge of certain mathematical subjects? I'm aware that claiming something isn't as valuable as proving it, that's why I would prefer to do some kind of informal test, either written or oral, to prove that I have the knowledge I claim. For many relevant rudimentary subjects, I think my brilliant.org profile is going to be sufficient, but for subjects like point-set and algebraic topology, real and complex analysis, non-elementary number theory and abstract algebra, I think the only way to prove my knowledge is in the interview February the 15th, because I haven't been graded on any.
About the interview, how is it going to occur? Will I have to travel somewhere for it? Are there Brilliant staff in most big cities? Is it going to be online, either by text or Skype video?
Does this scholarship apply to any engineering degree? Does computer science count as engineering since it's so practical? I would guess not, but worth asking, so: can this apply to a pure mathematics or physics degree instead of engineering?
What do you suggest that I could do on the internet from now, January the 3rd, until the 31st aside from contributing to Brilliant.org that could help me the most in my application? Answers could be for example, posting on math.stackexchange, doing something like projecteuler, etc.
I'm sorry for writing so much, and I realize it's going to be a pain for you to parse through it, but I tried to be as thorough as possible so I don't ask more questions later, and so I don't leave room for ambiguity.
Last but not least, semi-off-topic comments that you are not obliged to reply to. I regret not opening my Brilliant profile in 3 months and using it so little during the 15 days I used it, I opened it today by accident after I got a problem sent to my email that I knew the solution to. Then, again by accident, I went to check out my profile and was so extremely happy when I saw this scholarship offer to Waterloo being given by Brilliant, which was always my target university for the future. I wish I would have known of this back in November, but better late than never.
I realize that my profile is nowhere near impressive or worthy of such a scholarship, that's why I bought a premium for a month just now. I have Christmas break (or more like mid-year hiatus) until the 19th of January, so I have 16 days where I'm completely free to contribute as much as I possibly can to this website, and with the premium, answer to premium challenges too, which are worth more. So now, my (for real this time around :) ) final question, what kind of contributions in your opinion will help me the most in my application?
At the moment, I have three things in mind, but there might more and hopefully you might instruct since I'm not familiar much with the website.
I can mass-solve problems in every single section, and get extremely high scores in each section. This is what I was doing for the short amount of time I used this website.
I can choose hard problems only, write up elaborate solutions in TEX, and post them in the comments. This will of course mean I will solve many less problems.
I could try to be very creative and come up with good problems for the community, while at the same time doing 1. or 2. to a much lesser degree.
So which ones do you think I should concentrate on the most because they're going to be the most influential in my application?
Thank you very very much for this opportunity, and thank you very much in advance for your reply.
Oh, and one more thing.
It would be nice, but not necessary, to know how many people can get the once-in-a-lifetime chance so we can know how slim our chances actually are.
You have many questions, I will respond to your first question as that seems to be the most time sensitive for you. Under my understanding of CEGEP, you are eligible for this scholarship. While you are receiving college credit, you are not enrolled in a program that will grant you an undergraduate degree.
@Peter Taylor
–
Thank you for the response :)
That was indeed the most sensitive, and I understand if you don't want to answer the other questions. I wouldn't either, I realised in hindsight that I asked way too many questions.
I have sent my application on January 31st and you have replied to my application sending a confirmation email by February 4th, so am I considered a early applicant or a rolling one? Especially I have not received any email yet confirming or rejecting me as a finalist.
What does this mean? "Candidates who make the first cut work with Brilliant to apply to Waterloo Engineering through OUAC. Brilliant pays associated application fees."
Hi Ellen, my apologies – I thought we had responded to this. This just means that Brilliant will help any student who qualifies for the scholarship apply to Waterloo through their online system.
We will certainly look at your activity on Brilliant when considering candidates for this scholarship. I would not worry about your level too much. Things you can do on Brilliant that will help your candidacy:
Contribute good articles to our wiki
Post problems that people like
Write good solutions to problems
-Help people who do not understand in the discussion of solutions on Brilliant
Show improvement in problem-solving over time. Your absolute level is not very important to this scholarship. We are most interested in your ability and passion for learning new things.
What if I'm already a second year electrical engineering student, and I need this scholarship badly. Is this scholarship only for the incoming freshmen?
Unfortunately, you do not meet the requirements for this scholarship. You must be planning to enter the first year of an undergraduate degree program in 2015.
I dont understand. In the official website of Waterloo university there is no scholarship for international students. And one of the staffs told me that as the university is new they dont have much scholarship opportunity for international students... then what is the job of brilliant.org actually?
Hi Madhurjo – this is a special scholarship offered by Brilliant.org to attend the University of Waterloo. International students from any country may apply.
Am I supposed to enroll/register in the waterloo website and then go this scholarship program or write the essay for this scholarship program and later worry about the registration part??
Hi :) 2 questions: 1. I have just joined brilliant recently, how badly would the lack of participation in brilliant hurt my chances? 2. How many scholarships are offered in total?
Hi Bright - I wouldn't worry about that. This is a merit-based scholarship, and the main criteria are your past accomplishments and your essay. Excellent past participation on Brilliant can help your chances somewhat, in that we have more evidence of your merit, but it's not the only thing we look at. Up to 2 scholarships will be offered. One is reserved for a female candidate.
I put my essay on my profile but i emailed a more detailed application containing achievements and everything. HOw will I know if my application has been reviewed and when to send in my transcripts? Also, since the deadline has been postponed.. is there any chance i could improve my essay and resubmit. or is the essay i sent in the email final? Thanks
Hi Abhishek - you can improve your essay and resubmit until February 15. However, you would no longer be considered an early applicant, so we recommend only doing this if you plan to make substantial improvements to the content of the essay. We will notify finalists within the next few weeks, and request transcripts.
I am first year engineering student at Addis Ababa Institute of Technology.i appriciate the concept related with mathematics&natural science.to what extent is this scholarship making me effective?what are the fields of engineering going to serve us this institute?
Unfortunately, you do not qualify for the scholarship. You must be planning to graduate high school / secondary school and enter the first year of an undergraduate degree program in 2015.

I am attending the University of Waterloo in the Mechatronics Engineering program. This is my first year. Is the requirement to be fresh out of secondary school strict? I would like to apply. My entrance grades were excellent and my current GPA is very good as well.
Unfortunately not. You must be planning to graduate high school / secondary school and enter the first year of an undergraduate degree program in 2015.

It is not necessary to take the TOEFL test to apply for the scholarship. If you're a good candidate for the scholarship, Brilliant will work with you to evaluate your English proficiency. If your English abilities do not meet the standard, then we will try to help you meet the standard.
My higher secondary certificate exam will be held on April 2015 and the result will be published within June 2015. So can i apply with my secondary school certificate transcript? And I once made a scientific poster and attended a science congress. So can I write about that as Waterloo Scholarship essay?
well in what should i focus while writing the essay? And should i write about some good things about me... my interests, my talents? Can i add recommendation letter with the application? Can i add certificates from extracurricular activities like sports, dance, singing etc?

Hi Madhurjo, you're encouraged to write about any area in which you can demonstrate excellence. Letters of recommendation and certificates are not necessary.
Hi Marlon - Unfortunately, this scholarship is only open to students entering a university for the first time and is not available for people pursuing transfer, post-bac, or graduate studies.
I do not have any of the English proficiency tests that the Univeristy requires, however I have the First Certificate in English (FCE), isn't it enough?
Hi Karem, no need to worry about the English proficiency tests, for now. If you qualify for the scholarship, Brilliant will work with you to figure out the necessary certificates.
Ok,I've english at my first language at school.Do I still need to take an IELTS or a TOEFL test? Also, they ask you to take their Gauss contest. Is it mandatory?
Hi Priyatam, no need to worry about the English proficiency, for now. If you qualify for the scholarship, Brilliant will work with you to obtain any necessary certificates. The Gauss contest is not necessary for the scholarship.
I wanted to ask about , this that if a student is already in a first year program of a university in his or her country , and he is planning to change his faculty or department of engineering , to join this chance of applying to waterloo ,
is he eligible or not ,i have taken courses ,when i was completing my A levels and, its just a year for me to be in a well known university of pakistan .
Hi Zain - Unfortunately, this scholarship is only open to students entering a university for the first time and is not available for people pursuing transfer, post-bac, or graduate studies.
I really want to be an engineer. And i have to apply for this scholarship. Aside from making an essay what are the other requirements? I'm a freshman but if given a chance i would really want to have this scholarship. I've been loving math since i was a kid.
Pls i wana ask about the scholarship... I am from Nigeria.. In Nigeria we take exams like WAEC, NECO, GCE, etc... But i have my NECO result. In my NECO i have credits in all my subjects(physics, chemistry, mathematics, English, etc.. )but i am not studying in any University for now, but am still learning in a polytechnic... Am i qualified to participate?
Hi Shovan - eventually, yes. However, if another copy of your transcript is not readily available to send to us by January 31, then you can just send us your essay. Later on, if you are a frontrunner for the scholarship, we will request a transcript from you.
I have a done a small research on the emergency situation in India in 1971 can I include it, the whole report is quite long and is definitely more than 650 words
Hi Harshvardhan - If you would like to talk about your work on the report, please summarize your work in the scholarship essay instead of including the whole report.
Hi Renata - you must be planning to enroll in the first year of an undergraduate degree program in 2015. Age is not a factor. The transcript does not need to be in English. If it is difficult to send us the transcript by Jan 31, it's fine to just send us your essay. If you are a leading candidate for the scholarship, we will reach out to you and request that you send a transcript.
Hi Luthando – you can apply for the scholarship this year if you are planning to enter the first year of an undergraduate degree program in 2015. We have not yet finalized what scholarships will be available through Brilliant for 2016.
I have some new ideas. and have been working on some of it, but the problem is i am living in very remote area hence there is no one to guide and help me and also there is no one for supporting me financially for my works. Al tough i have gained lots of knowledge via internet . currently i am studding in class 12 and planning for B.tec degree in 2015. so please will you suggest me what to do ? also i have received some awards from my school for my project work, so should i mention that too in my achievements ?
Hi Vishal - yes, you're welcome to mention awards from your school. If you're living someplace very remote, we understand that you have probably had fewer opportunities for guidance and financial support. Don't worry about that. Just tell us about what you did to gain knowledge, and how you used the resources that were available to you.
Hi Karem – you're welcome to use the essay to tell us about you. However, the essay should include a description of something that you have studied or worked on.
Hi, I'm from Pakistan. Here we have a system in which the 10 grade is equivalent to O levels. I am in 10th grade and will give the examinations in March. The result will come in about July. Am I eligible for the scholarship?
3 questions :
1)We have not got our transcript in school (i doubt that they will give any sooner). Does this means straight disqualification :( ?
2)Will my Brilliant score affect my chances of selection?
3)Is SAT,TOEFEL,etc scores not compulsory?
Hi Manas - if you don't have your transcript yet, just send us your essay. You will not be disqualified. Later on, if you are a frontrunner for the scholarship, we will request a transcript from you. Your participation on Brilliant can help your chances of selection if it has been exceptional, but your Brilliant score will not hurt your chances. SAT and TOEFL scores are not necessary at this time. However if you are a leading candidate to win the scholarship, we will need to verify English proficiency.
Well bro, in my country, a person below 18 can get a passport as well. I have one. I don't know about the rules in your country. But I think the rules are similar in Pakistan and India
Hi ! I have a question regarding original documents since it is asking for it but I will be needing them to apply in other universities, as it is clearly mentioned over there that your original documents will not be sent back to you so what am I going to do in that case ?
Hi Nouma - It's fine to send us a copy of your transcript. If it's not readily available by January 31, then you can just send us your essay. Later on, if you are a frontrunner for the scholarship, we will request a transcript from you.
Hello! I graduated high school in June 2014, but because I got sick over the summer from a chronic illness, I deferred my enrollment to Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Waterloo until September 2015. They said I would get another admission letter in the mail as I'm not enrolled but still accepted. Can I still apply for the scholarship?
Hi Shrief - thanks for letting us know about this. It's fine to just send us your essay. Later on, if you are a frontrunner for the scholarship, we will request a transcript from you.
I am a British system students. The amount subjects which I have completed now does not fulfill the requirements of the University of Waterloo, I will have completed the required amount of subjects by June 2015 however the grades will not come out before mid August 2015, so will I still be able to apply for the scholarship? Also, if I have not participated enough to the Brilliant.org enrichment community, will I still be eligible for the scholarship? Moreover, how many students will be selected for the scholarship?
Thank you in advance.
Hi Mohammad – completing the required subjects by June 2015 is fine, even if the grades come out in August. You can still apply for the scholarship. This is a merit-based scholarship, and the main criteria are your past accomplishments and your essay. Up to 2 scholarships will be offered. One is reserved for a female candidate.
I've submitted my essay for the Scholarship in the "Submit Waterloo Scholarship" section but the essay is not visible when i logout of my account and open the news feed section through my profile link. Has it been submitted properly and is the essay supposed to be visible to all after submission?
Yes, your essay has been submitted. The essay is only visible if you are logged in to Brilliant. In addition, if you made your essay private, it is visible only to you and staff.
Is the selection process (for those who had applied earlier) complete. Will no more applicants be selected in that criteria? If so,I'd be grateful,if you could post the first stage result as a separate note on the site.I'm sorry but, Am I in ?
is it possible , for someone without past knowledge and experience about any engineering thing , but have alr participated in enrichment community , and has a strong desire to study , be considered by this scholarships?
i'm from social class , which mean i only have english and maths as a requirement ... Which mean i cannot win this scholarships even tho my math and english is 95 ... @Suyeon Khim
Hi Asef, you should have received a confirmation email. Please check again whether you have received it. If you have not, then someone on the team will resend.
Hi,
Someone who has already entered the university but has not been able to complete the course for any reason, can still apply for scholarship?
Tanks.
Hi Anderson - unfortunately, you are ineligible for this scholarship if you have already entered a university, even if you did not complete the course.
Hi Ahmed, we received your essay. You should have received a confirmation email. Please check again whether you have received it. If you have not, then someone on the team will resend.
I have submitted my essay and achievements. But how do I prove that I'm in 12th std and planning to enter engg in 2015?
Also, my age is shown as 18 when I'm 17. Will that affect?
Hi Lavish, thanks for letting us know, and don't worry about your age being shown as 18. If you're a finalist, we will request an official transcript and confirm with your school that you are in 12th std.
I am currently in my first semester of Industrial Engineering at UABC (Universidad Autonoma de Baja California) and it is very comforting that i can see this type of programs, and I am really looking forward to haveing a chance in something like this. Do you know someone or somewhere i can comunicate to recieve more info. about this and other specific points?
I send my essay and Brilliant.org Waterloo Engineering Undergraduate scholarship ask for High school transcript. My question is how and where can i send my transcript.please answer me urgent.
On my profile where it says "submit Waterloo scholarship essay" the prompt is different to what was emailed to me. The prompt in the link that we emailed to me includes the topic "Write an essay about something you have done that you are proud of" along with the topic included in my profile. Wondering if it is still okay for me to use the topic I mentioned above. Thank you for your time.
Yes, it's fine to write about the other essay topic. We'll get the interface updated as well, so that both prompts are shown, but you don't need to wait for us to do that before submitting your essay.
Hi, @Suyeon Khim, I applied for the Brilliantorg Waterloo Engineering Undergraduate Scholarship, on January 31, 2015. I didn't receive any confirmation, so I was wondering, how would I know that I need to schedule the interview? Do the applicants need to contact on their own? If yes, then how are they supposed to schedule one? Thanks.
Hi Aden, we have received your application. We will start contacting finalists soon to schedule interviews, once we have finished selecting the finalists.
Hi,I have submitted my essay through my profile, can you please give me a confirmation if you have received it?Also, does the essay need to have a title?
Thanks!
Feb 15th is the deadline for rolling applications.
On Feb 18th, we will be sending out details to those who applied by Jan 31st. After that, applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until all scholarships are awarded.
@Suyeon Khim , @Peter Taylor, I received the confirmation email for my essay. It says that I need to set up an interview, but it does not give any instructions for how to set up one. Kindly let me know of the procedure. Thanks.
Feb 15th is the deadline for rolling applications.
On Feb 18th, we will be sending out details to those who applied by Jan 31st. After that, applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until all scholarships are awarded.
Few candidates who submitted their essays by Jan 31 have been interviewed this week and the last. Other candidates would probably be interviewed within this wee
I have submitted my essay by email on 31st January, but until now I was not given any reply... am I considered as early applicant or I still have to wait? thank you.
Hi Krisna, you can just include a list of the achievements in your profile, and then we will ask for the certificates to verify if you qualify for the scholarship.
Hi Ahmed, it is not necessary to submit the IELTS exam to Brilliant in order to qualify for the scholarship. If you are the best candidate for the scholarship, we will work with you to submit language proficiency results to Waterloo before you start your university studies.
I've submitted my essay for the Scholarship in the "Submit Waterloo Scholarship" section but the essay is not visible when i logout of my account and open the news feed section through my profile link. Has it been submitted properly and is the essay supposed to be visible to all after submission?
Hi Medusa, we received your essay. You should have received a confirmation email. Please check again whether you have received it. If you have not, then someone on the team will resend.

Wow
How old must a person be to apply?
You must be eligible to enroll at the university of Waterloo next fall. For most people, that will be 17 years old, although there may be people both younger and older who are eligible.
When you use the term eligible to enroll, could you please list the criteria that makes one eligible to enroll? Is higher secondary schooling necessary here? @Peter Taylor @Suyeon Khim
these requirements apply?
DoAww, I can't apply
Please post the names of the finalists in each round on brilliant. Not only by sending them emails. So that we know who are the brilliant people getting near to a brilliant scholarship.

Hello,
This is a very important follow up to the question posed by Colita and answered by Peter considering the question of "transfer" vs "apply" for residents of the province of Quebec. Since you're in the US, I will try my best to concisely explain the difference between French Canada and Anglo Canada.
In Quebec, we have the CEGEP system. In this system, science and math students have only a binary choice of "Pure and Applied Science" and "Health Science".
Hi Gregg,
You have many questions, I will respond to your first question as that seems to be the most time sensitive for you. Under my understanding of CEGEP, you are eligible for this scholarship. While you are receiving college credit, you are not enrolled in a program that will grant you an undergraduate degree.
I have sent my application on January 31st and you have replied to my application sending a confirmation email by February 4th, so am I considered a early applicant or a rolling one? Especially I have not received any email yet confirming or rejecting me as a finalist.
You must be an early applicant , since im a rolling applicant and still haven't recieved any confirmation.
Some of the early applicants have been interviewed this week and the last. The staff will probably interview the rolling applicants within this week.
Does it work with your score on brilliant - as in does it have to be high or can any user enter?
We will certainly look at your activity on Brilliant when considering candidates for this scholarship. I would not worry about your level too much. Things you can do on Brilliant that will help your candidacy:
Thank you!
I only began using Brilliant recently. My cousin recommended it to me, so I haven't posted any notes or problems as yet. Thank you for your reply.
What if I'm already a second year electrical engineering student, and I need this scholarship badly. Is this scholarship only for the incoming freshmen?
Unfortunately, you do not meet the requirements for this scholarship. You must be planning to enter the first year of an undergraduate degree program in 2015.
what should i do now for preparation for this program
Hi Girija, I recommend working hard, striving for excellence, and remembering to follow your passion.
project of biomathematics is alowed.....??????
Yes!
Hi Rajeev - you can write the essay for the scholarship, and later worry about the registration part.
I sent my essay to scholarships@brilliant.org but did not get a reply. I just wanted to know if the applicants will get a confirmation email?
We haven't sent confirmations yet for applications submitted after the early deadline. You should hear from us some time in the next week.
They will.
Thank you for telling me this. I got worried :P
wonderful :)
What is the age criteria? What kind of projects or what type of challenge we have to write about?
Hi Arna, you must be planning to graduate high school / secondary school and enter the first year of an undergraduate degree program in 2015.
I'm now first year college in Mechanical Engineering. Is this for freshmen only?
Unfortunately, this scholarship is only for students entering their first year of college.
I am first year engineering student at Addis Ababa Institute of Technology.i appriciate the concept related with mathematics&natural science.to what extent is this scholarship making me effective?what are the fields of engineering going to serve us this institute?

what is the age requirements
Hi Hari, you must be planning to graduate high school / secondary school and enter the first year of an undergraduate degree program in 2015.
A 9th grade wants to take a scholarship, is that allowed?
What do you mean school transcript?
Hi Figel, you must be planning to graduate high school / secondary school and enter the first year of an undergraduate degree program in 2015.
Should I take TOEFL test?
It is not necessary to take the TOEFL test to apply for the scholarship. If you're a good candidate for the scholarship, Brilliant will work with you to evaluate your English proficiency. If your English abilities do not meet the standard, then we will try to help you meet the standard.
Do I still need to take the SAT test? I think, that's mandatory. Isn't it?
My higher secondary certificate exam will be held on April 2015 and the result will be published within June 2015. So can i apply with my secondary school certificate transcript? And I once made a scientific poster and attended a science congress. So can I write about that as Waterloo Scholarship essay?
Yes and yes.
well in what should i focus while writing the essay? And should i write about some good things about me... my interests, my talents? Can i add recommendation letter with the application? Can i add certificates from extracurricular activities like sports, dance, singing etc?
well in what should i focus while writing the essay? And should i write about some good things about me... my interests, my talents? Can i add recommendation letter with the application? Can i add certificates from extracurricular activities like sports, dance, singing etc?
Hi Madhurjo, you're encouraged to write about any area in which you can demonstrate excellence. Letters of recommendation and certificates are not necessary.
Hi, Im Marlon 17 yrs. old, A first year student of Civil Engineering Course. Can I have an opportunity to take this scholarship grant?
Hi Marlon - Unfortunately, this scholarship is only open to students entering a university for the first time and is not available for people pursuing transfer, post-bac, or graduate studies.
Can anybody perticipate for the scholarship out of USA or any other country?
Yes!
I wanted to ask about , this that if a student is already in a first year program of a university in his or her country , and he is planning to change his faculty or department of engineering , to join this chance of applying to waterloo , is he eligible or not ,i have taken courses ,when i was completing my A levels and, its just a year for me to be in a well known university of pakistan .
Hi Zain - Unfortunately, this scholarship is only open to students entering a university for the first time and is not available for people pursuing transfer, post-bac, or graduate studies.
If my English grades are not so good, can I apply?
Hi Paola, it is not necessary to demonstrate excellence in every subject to qualify for the scholarship.
Thank you:)
I really want to be an engineer. And i have to apply for this scholarship. Aside from making an essay what are the other requirements? I'm a freshman but if given a chance i would really want to have this scholarship. I've been loving math since i was a kid.
Hi Frederich -- unfortunately, you must be graduating from secondary school this year in order to be eligible for this scholarship.
Is this program binding?
Nope.
I have already sent my transcripts to the university of Waterloo. Do I need to submit them here again?
Hi Shovan - eventually, yes. However, if another copy of your transcript is not readily available to send to us by January 31, then you can just send us your essay. Later on, if you are a frontrunner for the scholarship, we will request a transcript from you.
I have a done a small research on the emergency situation in India in 1971 can I include it, the whole report is quite long and is definitely more than 650 words
Hi Harshvardhan - If you would like to talk about your work on the report, please summarize your work in the scholarship essay instead of including the whole report.
Hi, the transcript should be in English? I am 24 years old, Am I qualified? Thanks
I completed a-levels in 2014 and currently I am in NUST university Can I apply
Hi Hamza - unfortunately not. You must be currently enrolled in your last year of high school to apply for this scholarship.
Is this scholarship going to be available for those that want to do engineering in 2016?
Shall I tell you something about me in my essay? Or the essay is only about the proyect?
Hi Karem – you're welcome to use the essay to tell us about you. However, the essay should include a description of something that you have studied or worked on.
I will and must get this scholarship for sure !
Good luck!
is this scholarship is also for graduate aspects ???
Nope, undergraduates only.
With regards to the transcript, submitting it in the form of a PDF is sufficient? Thanks.
Yes, that is sufficient.
Hi, I'm from Pakistan. Here we have a system in which the 10 grade is equivalent to O levels. I am in 10th grade and will give the examinations in March. The result will come in about July. Am I eligible for the scholarship?
Hi Krona - only if you are planning to enter the first year of an undergraduate degree program in 2015.
3 questions : 1)We have not got our transcript in school (i doubt that they will give any sooner).
What if I don't have a passport? I turn 18 only in june for applying passport. What shall I do, wanna waste a year?
Well bro, in my country, a person below 18 can get a passport as well. I have one. I don't know about the rules in your country. But I think the rules are similar in Pakistan and India
I am not an expert on passports, but I believe you should be able to get one even if you are under 18 years old.
can male students win the scolarship?
Yes, a male student can win. Only one of the scholarship spots is reserved for a female candidate.
Later on, if you are a frontrunner for the scholarship, we will request a transcript from you.
i am in 2nd year computer science and engineering student ,can i apply for the scholarship
Hi Medusa - unfortunately, this scholarship is only for students applying to enter the first year of the engineering program.
Hi Jacob - yes, you can still apply.
Is it mandatory to translate the transcript in a verified place ! Or should i translate it myself ?
I.e my transcript is arabic
Hi Shrief - thanks for letting us know about this. It's fine to just send us your essay. Later on, if you are a frontrunner for the scholarship, we will request a transcript from you.
is there any chance that a person already doing electrical engineering could apply for this marvelous opportunity?
Nope, sorry.
i am studying at university in physics. can i apply for this scholarship?
Nope, sorry.
Thanks a lot Suyeon.
Is the selection process (for those who had applied earlier) complete. Will no more applicants be selected in that criteria? If so,I'd be grateful,if you could post the first stage result as a separate note on the site.I'm sorry but, Am I in ?
Hi Priyatam – we have not made any decisions yet.
is it possible , for someone without past knowledge and experience about any engineering thing , but have alr participated in enrichment community , and has a strong desire to study , be considered by this scholarships?
Hi Jewise, you must be eligible to enter the first year of an undergraduate degree program in Engineering at the University of Waterloo. Follow the link to learn more.
i'm from social class , which mean i only have english and maths as a requirement ... Which mean i cannot win this scholarships even tho my math and english is 95 ... @Suyeon Khim
@Suyeon Khim can you please tell where the interview will be taken ?
Over the phone or video chat.
Thank you @Suyeon Khim for response :)
I've submitted my essay through my profile. When and how will I be notified if my essay is selected?
Hi Asef, you should have received a confirmation email. Please check again whether you have received it. If you have not, then someone on the team will resend.
how could i know about the result
We will select finalists by March and let everyone know the result.
Hi, Someone who has already entered the university but has not been able to complete the course for any reason, can still apply for scholarship? Tanks.
Hi Anderson - unfortunately, you are ineligible for this scholarship if you have already entered a university, even if you did not complete the course.
can I submit today for the scholarship
A small box in the bottom left corner of your home page shows the number of days left.
Yes, you can submit until February 15!
Do you need to have the interview and pass the transcript by February 15? Or is it only the essay that is needed?
I have send my essay to scholarships@brilliant.org and no responds to my email have been sent. Should I post the essay to my profile?
Hi Ahmed, we received your essay. You should have received a confirmation email. Please check again whether you have received it. If you have not, then someone on the team will resend.
I have posted the essay on my account. Should I post it on waterloo website or in any other place?
Hi Ahmed - we see that you have posted the essay to your profile. You do not need to post it to the Waterloo website or any other place.
Ok thank you...
How to apply for scholarship
Read the linked wiki article in the top of this note.
What if we are in a differant country, in my case; Mexico, and want to know more about this.
--Suyeon Khim
I am currently in my first semester of Industrial Engineering at UABC (Universidad Autonoma de Baja California) and it is very comforting that i can see this type of programs, and I am really looking forward to haveing a chance in something like this. Do you know someone or somewhere i can comunicate to recieve more info. about this and other specific points?
To apply, you must be planning to enter the first year of an undergraduate programming this summer or at most defer it by one year.
I send my essay and Brilliant.org Waterloo Engineering Undergraduate scholarship ask for High school transcript. My question is how and where can i send my transcript.please answer me urgent.
I think, if you are selected , then they will accept transcript from you through a certain medium.
How students will be selected for it?
will there be any tests for this selection process
Just the essay is required, to make the first cut. We will also consider your academic transcript and interview in the final selection.
We'll get the interface updated as well, so that both prompts are shown, but you don't need to wait for us to do that before submitting your essay.
ok. thank you for that info. :) glad to hear it
Hi, @Suyeon Khim, I applied for the Brilliantorg Waterloo Engineering Undergraduate Scholarship, on January 31, 2015.
Thanks!
We haven't sent confirmations yet for applications submitted after the early deadline. You should hear from us some time in the next week.
I received a conformation mail for my essay. But I haven't informed whether I am selected for interview, since its 15th FEB.
Feb 15th is the deadline for rolling applications.
On Feb 18th, we will be sending out details to those who applied by Jan 31st. After that, applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until all scholarships are awarded.
Thank you for the reply...Praying to Allah, and waiting impatiently for 18FEB.
@Suyeon Khim , @Peter Taylor, I received the confirmation email for my essay. It says that I need to set up an interview, but it does not give any instructions for how to set up one. Kindly let me know of the procedure. Thanks.
Feb 15th is the deadline for rolling applications.

I have updated the wiki page to reflect this.
I have not been told about my essay till now.
You'll have two wait. It's not yet 18th Feb in San Francisco.
A mathematic fever , to converted into two
Today I saw your photo on my mtg magazine , you were holding i lakh ruppes cheque. (Nco).Congratulations.
Has anyone who submitted essay after Jan 1 been shortlisted? If not, how and when will you contact the shortlisted candidates?
Few candidates who submitted their essays by Jan 31 have been interviewed this week and the last. Other candidates would probably be interviewed within this wee
hey @Agnishom Chattopadhyay have you been interviewed, or are you selected for next round ?
I haven't been contacted yet,not even received a confirmation.Hopefully will know something by the end of this week or the next.
Can I still submit the essay?
AFAIK, no. The deadline is long gone.
I dont think so. you are a bit late
I have submitted my essay by email on 31st January, but until now I was not given any reply... am I considered as early applicant or I still have to wait? thank you.
I am optimistic that Brilliant will send replies within the end of this month.
good luck then!
I do not interview. The Brilliant staff does.
and where's the updated news?
Brilliant is still making decisions. Notifications will be sent this week as soon as the recepient is selected
I have submitted my application by email on January 31st 2015. I have yet to receive a reply from Brilliant.
Any ideas?
Yep, the replies are due real soon
Thanks, I hope to hear from them soon. I am really afraid that they haven't received my email.
If I have some achievements, can I email the certificates also with my highschool trancript?
Hi Krisna, you can just include a list of the achievements in your profile, and then we will ask for the certificates to verify if you qualify for the scholarship.
Is there a deadline for submitting the IELTS exam to Brilliant?
Hi Ahmed, it is not necessary to submit the IELTS exam to Brilliant in order to qualify for the scholarship. If you are the best candidate for the scholarship, we will work with you to submit language proficiency results to Waterloo before you start your university studies.
I've submitted my essay for the Scholarship in the "Submit Waterloo Scholarship" section but the essay is not visible when i logout of my account and open the news feed section through my profile link. Has it been submitted properly and is the essay supposed to be visible to all after submission?
Hi Aditya, I responded to your earlier post about this question. Please see my response a few posts below.
is my essay submit to you?
