This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Accept my greetings, Sir!

As I got inspired by one of my role models, Sir Terence Tao, he learnt Calculus when he was only 7! So I also resolved to learn Calculus, as early as possible. But I am not getting the right way. Sir, can you please suggest me what should I do now?

Swapnil Das - 5 years, 11 months ago

The best way to learn anything is to first make strategy for it. And don't forget to go through a systematic learning. For calculus, fir you need to have a good understanding of functions, then go for the limits to the functions, then continuity and then differentiability and so on.

Calculus is quite interesting both conceptually and computationally. You will get to know quite interesting notions in calculus and you'll also find a lot of interesting problems related to the calculus notions.

So, enjoy learning calculus through the systematic learning. All the best!

Thank You Sir!

Swapnil Das - 5 years, 11 months ago

Right .Terence Tau is a great inspiration for me as well.He is a prodigy.Mathematician by birth. He is the youngest gold medalist in IMO(merely 10 year old).Amazing!

Siddharth Singh - 5 years, 11 months ago

You do not need to be Terry Tao to understand Calculus, at least not at 14.

Just jump right in and post to us anytime you are stuck.

One more thing, please try to conceptualise and visualize everything you learn along the way. Thinking of Calculus as a bunch of formulae and rules do not usually take people far.

Thank You, please don't mind answering this question:

If dx is a very small x, then why should dy/dx be called instantaneous rate of change?

Swapnil Das - 5 years, 11 months ago

@Swapnil Das Because dx is not just very small, it is infinitesimally small. dy/dx is How much y changes for a very small x?, or rather, How much y changes with respect to the change in x at this point?

This is better understood with velocity, which is dx/dt, t being time.

Sir, I have started preparing for JEE 2017 . I currently solve 60-70 problems of each subject. I also have decided to complete the entire portion till June 2016 and just revision and test series after that. Is this enough to get a rank in top 50 ? With this rank can I get a sit in comp science at IIT-BOMBAY? And also give me tips to get all the above. How to deal with chemistry ,it's bit difficult ? Also tell me whether IQ. plays any roll in cracking JEE or is it only the hardwork and persistence that counts ?? Pls reply

Aditya Lalbondre - 5 years, 11 months ago

  • There is no hard and fast condition to get into top 50 All India Rank. One thing I would like to add here is to stop thinking about the rank top 50 or top 100 or whatever, and start focusing on excellence. Have command over all the concepts of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

  • That's great that you have planned a strategy for your preparation. I assure you that nothing can stop you from achieving your goals if you follow your plan with full dedication and always give your best and maintain persistence in your studies.

  • Yeah, if you get top 50 rank in JEE-Advanced, then you can get admission to IIT-Bombay whatever the branch you desire.

  • Nothing is difficult and never go by the opinion of the people who tell you that something is difficult. Believe in your own instincts, your skills and your hard-work.

  • Obviously, IQ plays role everywhere, in grasping the concepts and learning their applications, which is what JEE demands. But hard-work and persistence always pays you through enhancing your skills.

The day your thoughts, your words and your actions will be in harmony, you will be at the top.

All the best!

Sir, How can I develop grasping power ? I study through cengage and I have its entire series, is it enough ? There are nearly 30000 - 40000 problems totally in all the books.

Aditya Lalbondre - 5 years, 11 months ago

@Aditya Lalbondre Keep revising the concepts and solve as much problems as you can. Cengage books are good to clear your basics, so I would recommend you to go through the complete series of books and probably in the next session, you can go for the high level JEE books giving you a lot of JEE-Advanced level problems for practice. Wherever you get stuck, you can post a note to the Brilliant, and you will get the solution(s) to your doubt.

Sandeep Bhardwaj - 5 years, 11 months ago

I'll be giving JEE '16 and I'm fully motivated. But I'm facing a lil problem with the topic - Coordinate Geometry. I couldn't grasp much when it was going on in my class. Also, it seems I forget concepts within a few weeks if I don't revise them. I wonder if we have review sets on brilliant. Like for example - I almost forgot Complex numbers. Thanx for helping though.

PS: I like your sets so much ! :D

Priyansh Sangule - 5 years, 11 months ago

That's great to see that you're fully motivated. Don't worry much about if you forget concepts within a week or two, what you can do for that is to revise the concepts from time to time and practice lot of questions of co-ordinate geometry which will help you in grasping the concepts for a longer time and boost your understanding. For review sets, I'll be working very soon. All the best! You can try my sets if you want to review your concepts.

All the best!

Is P=NP?

Agnishom Chattopadhyay - 5 years, 11 months ago

Please explain what do you exactly want to ask . Define "P" and "NP" here.

Sandeep Bhardwaj - 5 years, 11 months ago

P is the set of all problems that can be solved in polynomial time by a deterministic turing machine.

NP is the set of all problems that can be solved in polynomial time by a non-deterministic turing machine.

What this really means is "If a solution to a problem can be verified easily, can it be easily solved too?"

While the answer seems like intuitively "No", this is an open problem so far because no one has actually proven it. This is one of the most discussed open problems in theoretical computer science.

Sir, will you please suggest some good books for Calculus and Combinatorics? Also some physics books ?

Siddharth Singh - 5 years, 11 months ago

If you have zero idea about Calculus and are looking for something light, I would suggest you get a copy of Calculus Made Easy. Otherwise go for Spivak's Calculus.

For combinatorics, I suggest Applied Combinatorics by Tucker

sir i am confuse in deciding the branch in iit iam getting mechanical engineering at iit kanpur and kharagpur civil engineering at iit bombay and delhi which branch i choose and which coolege\

shubham singh - 5 years, 11 months ago

It completely relies on your interests and your preferences. So, according to me, you should give more preference to the branch than the college. Therefore, if you prefer Mechanical, then go for IIT kanpur or khargapur , otherwise go for IIT Bomaby or Delhi.

Congrats and All the best.!

It is better to revise the chapters that you've mastered already. Don't pick the topics that you're new to.

Hello sir!! I am preparing for IITJEE 2017. I find mathematics and physics really interesting but I have no interest in chemistry. As I need to learn chemistry to crack the prestigious JEE please give me tips to generate interest in it.

@Aakash Khandelwal

Give a lot more time to chemistry and you'll find that your interest is growing. Practice the numericals of physical chemistry, try to understand the mechanism of the reactions in organic chemistry and memorize the properties of the elements very well in case of inorganic chemistry.

Extremely sorry for such a late reply. :(

Hey :)

At this time, Brilliant has a lot of wikis that you can learn from. The wikis have examples to make you understand better and also the practice problems to get your well practiced. Thanks!

Extremely sorry for such a late reply. :(

Sandeep Bhardwaj - 5 years, 2 months ago

Hello Sir, Well I will try to make it as understandable as possible, sorry for bad English I am terribly bad in it. OK lets come to the topic, till my 12th standard I used to be a guy who hates mathematics a lot. During my 12th I found Brilliant.org and it tought me to love mathematics. It completely transformed me into a guy who breaths for maths. I spent my whole 2014 learning mathematics and physics. My hunger for learning new things used to be infinite. For the first time in my life it seemed to me that my life has a purpose. Till December 2014 I kept learning mathematics. But than I realized that I have to give my board exams also. So I decided to take a short break from mathematics and started studying my syllabus. After giving my board exams I don't know what happened to me. I was no longer a maths learner. I tried but I was not able to recover the previous flow. I have wasted the whole 2015. Ahh good old days :-( . What should I do to motivate me again.
