Biology involves cockroaches, right?

I have studied the structure of cockroach in my text book, but here's something that I learnt in real life observation. Feels like an experience worth sharing to me...

Though most of the people call cockroaches filthy and don't like them around, I feel they're pretty cool....

img2 img2

I've got one cockroach in my custody since 6 days and it's 4.4cm\approx 4.4 \text{cm} long with it's antenna 5cm\approx 5 cm .

 Cockroaches like their own hygiene .\color{#3D99F6}{\text{ Cockroaches like their own hygiene .}}

\bullet The cockroach keeps its legs and antennas clean from the wheat flour in the box, it eats it up (See the bent antenna in the second image? It's cleaning it with mouth)

It can't reach it's back otherwise I guess it'll clean it up too! Cockroaches like sugar more than wheat flour.\color{#3D99F6}{\text{Cockroaches like sugar more than wheat flour.}} \bullet Cockroaches eat only as much as they need, they don't spoil food unnecessarily (as per the amount of flour observed in the box).

\bullet Like most other insects, they DO NOT like to be on their back (upside down, I mean) ... I'd appreciate if someone gives a reason, I guess something like pressure difference and all (I really don't know, wanna know!)

Hope that changes your mind a little bit about cockroaches and you'll give a second thought \color{#20A900}{\text{second thought }} before smashing a cockroach when you come across one...

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Though your note seems convincing, I would still smash a cockroach if I see one because they are too creepy xD

At my biology tution, the teacher bisected a cockroach once, it was pretty cool, there are actually all the parts inside which were shown in the book, you should cut it up some time and see, its pretty awesome on the inside, you can even see its alimentary canal pretty clearly

Ohh , You have Biology too ? This Note Reminds me of my great fear to cockroaches , When I'am small Kid , I remember , I always got scared from cockroaches , Even I have lot of Scaring Nightmares of Cockroaches in my childhood. But really you have great capability to watch 'bisected cockroach' . Ehhh , I really got scared even imagine me in this situation for a second. Thumbs Up ! ¨\ddot\smile

Yep, i took bio so i have biology :) i am scared of them too but only when they are alive, i usually show my fear by killing them with a book

@Deepanshu Gupta And I didn't take biology but I still love insects... -_- When people wanna threaten me, they say they'll use insecticides at home :P LOL

Aditya Raut - 6 years, 3 months ago

I'm kind of liking the creature, like my pet, so I don't think I can cut him till he's alive -_-

LOL

how do u give him water?

Vighnesh Raut - 6 years, 3 months ago

@Vighnesh Raut By giving water, man! Just put in some 405 drops and I even saw him sucking some of it.

I help him clean the wings and back, I use a dry paintbrush for that...

@Aditya Raut doesn't the wheat flour and the water get mixed up??

Vighnesh Raut - 6 years, 3 months ago

@Vighnesh Raut Maybe the cockroach takes that as a combo meal :P haha

Aditya Raut - 6 years, 3 months ago

@Aditya Raut lol.....anyway you have done a good job by not smashing the roach

Vighnesh Raut - 6 years, 3 months ago

What's it like keeping a cockroach as a pet ? I'm just curious since none of my friends have a roach as their pet !

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 3 months ago

I must say cockroaches are also much conscious... :D

Rishabh Tripathi - 6 years, 3 months ago

Well, these are the same reasons why cockroaches are my papa's 'favorite's animal'. I agree with those thoughts and my liking to them is surely genetic.

I was also interested in the origin of the name "cockroach". That's pretty interesting - "cock" and "roach"(well, what's a roach, BTW? The only roach I know is Kemar Roach, West Indies Bowler XD). Any biological reference?

You know what an electronic roach in Android called? "App"roach :P

Aditya Raut - 6 years, 3 months ago

@Aditya Raut Lol! :D

Kartik Sharma - 6 years, 3 months ago

I feel the opposite about smashing a cockroach. I like seeing an alive cockroach as it looks kinda amazing but when I see one dead with all it's gut spilled everywhere (Like after getting squashed by a door) I feel disgusted.

Julian Poon - 6 years, 3 months ago

Great work. I would salute you if in the same way you study about a lizard.

U Z - 6 years, 3 months ago

That'll need some more courage and a bigger box because the lizard is really hard to catch and even more difficult to handle, feed etc.... what would i feed her man! Will try for sure if my folks don't freak out :P

Aditya Raut - 6 years, 3 months ago

Cockroach has a hypogynous mouth, the mouth parts are situated around the head and the mouth faces downwards, it has a "biting and chewing" type of mouth ... hope this helps , i dont think there's anything related to pressure diff
