This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science
related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should
explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments
should further the discussion of math and science.
When posting on Brilliant:
Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Just one tip I want to give that.... as you have lot of time so.. try to make habbit of killing questions of maths with different different method .... Killing is more important than just solving a math question ... That it !
For Books Others may recommend you better So I leave on them ..!
Best Of Luck !
I would recommend Cengage learning for maths to you, it contain all types of problems like single correct, multiple correct, integer, subjective, comprehension etc + unique and different solution to each and every problem :)
@Satvik Pandey
–
ohh yes ... Even I learned Lot from him . Yes I believe he will surly give his best on 24th may ! I have remember his lines he always says that one should always hoping for best .... something like that ..! And I believe he will definitely rock !
Well , I think for Maths your Coaching Class material will suffice and for additional knowledge on problem solving techniques , just GOOGLE individual topics . That way , u'll cover more ground .
Chemistry is too easy and I doubt that you'll want any help for that . But if u still want some book , see this. I use it as the "Resnick Halliday" of Chemistry .
And ofc , a Physics scholar like wouldn't need any tips for Physics , would you ? :P
Cengage learning books are very good for maths and physics ! And you can also join resonance's DLP course the material that they provide is very good !
@satvik pandey Hi Satvik. I'm also in the same boat. For Calculus, refer to the comments for this Note. I have recommended some places from where you can learn Calculus. @Sandeep Bhardwaj Sir has also mentioned another book.
@Satvik Pandey
–
Sorry for replying this late, but I spend very little time here nowadays. You're always welcome! I'm glad I could be of help. And all those Levels are just by sheer luck and what we call 'tukka-bazi'.. But anyway, you are far too kind!
I really admire the way you solve Mechanics problems. Keep it up and all the best for the future!
@Satvik Pandey
–
It's OK. What really matters the most is the effort you (and not the quality of your coaching center)put in. Having said that, the coaching center does help. I would suggest that you study from quality textbooks and practise all JEE type questions. If you have doubts, you can always post them as a Note here, and we will surely help you!
I think I would face a problem in time management. The school School runs from 10 AM to 4:30 PM and the coaching from 5:30 PM to 8;30 PM. Not much time would be left for self-studying. How are you going to manage?
@Satvik Pandey
–
Clueless. Will have to virtually use Sat-Sun (after school starts of course!() as backup (they're free as of now). Otherwise even I am worried. Do you have coaching even on Sat-Sun?
@Satvik Pandey
–
Another thing you could do is take your books from which you prepare and whenever you can, study from them in school too (if you already know what is being taught). However this could potentially get you into trouble with teachers...
@Satvik Pandey
–
Me too! I think in my Maths register, I've written 3 pages of what our teacher has taught us, and 6 pages on deriving formulae for solving First Order ODEs!
@User 123
–
But for that I would have to go for school for 2 days to attend practical classes for computer, then two days for Physics and Chemistry each. There are chances that Practical periods of two subject might clash but still it would be difficult for me to skip schools.
I am thinking of taking Hindi. I know this is not a very good combination but in my school only Hindi, Sanskrit. CS and Bio can be given to students in PCM group. And I am definitely not going to take Bio, unlike Krishna. :P
Till now I have never ever tried to understand stuffs in bio. I try to memorize them. That's why it seems very hard to me.
@Satvik Pandey
–
O.o? Why would you have to skip schools? I don't think practical classes will clash? If you dont mind, provide me with your email and we shall move this there? :P
@User 123
–
Bio 12th std portions can be done in 3 weeks. 11th is hard because it has a lot of retention based +physiology ( u have to understand it otherwise, youll end up with a 0 !! ). So on the whole , bio course is average + if you like bio , ull find it extremely easy, and youll end up looking out for more! And the only other option for medical students is BIOTECH, but its highly dangerous because you would be lagging behind whilst your peers would have an advantage (in college)
@User 123
–
LOL. I never write after first five-six pages. I listen only absent mindedly. My math teacher (last yr) was kind enuff to lemme do Brilliant problems but others weren't. 11th and 12th teacher- student relationships are always sour. They decry the backbenchers. They are too strict , I guess.
@Krishna Ar
–
I am not sure but I have heard from people who have studied that they merely give any holidays. So I think I have coaching from Mon-Sat and test on Sundays.
@Satvik Pandey
–
Just a bit of advice which might help you. Given your situationI would recommend that you go to sleep as soon as you can after returning from your coaching (perhaps around 9:30). You could then wake up early in the morning (say at 4) and study - it would help as you would also be fresh at this time. Maximize the hours of sleep you can get while traveling wherever you can. This way you won't have to sleep for too long at home and can consequently study. Also, I have the same problem of school every other Saturday. All of us stay at home instead and study. If you can study better at home, then you must skip school as many times as possible and study at home. You must also give priority to your IIT preparations instead of school projects or examinations. Above all, never lose hope and remain positive and upbeat. This is crucial for in my experience, one cannot study unless one is happy and is at peace.
@Satvik Pandey
–
Yeah even we skip twice a week. Unfortunately we cannot skip anymore days as we would otherwise be held back (minimum 75% attendance required).
You are tooooooo good at physics and calculus. Work on Algebra & the rest of math for JEE! Maybe popular authors like Arihant or Khanna's would do. Are you joining any coaching?
In my opinion, mathematics for JEE is made easy by the fact that the syllabus is very clearly demarcated. Sure, you can say the same for the other two, but in chemistry, you can never learn enough facts(especially with multi-correct questions).
So my point is, you should stick to one book for the theory and do all the questions in this book and that will be more than enough to cover all the concepts. My recommendation for this reference book would definitely be Objective Mathematics by R.D Sharma.
But practice is even more important and Arihant's textbook has a massive collection of questions which are definitely of JEE level. These two books along with your coaching material is enough, in my opinion.
indeed, though i would recomment Arihant books for now, there is so much to learn in it (some chapters like permutation and combination are poorly explained, however questions are still high quality) , for maths,
and DC Pandey for physics , also HC Verma, though you can handle physics on your own i think.
Chemistry, well, for Organic, R.K Gupta is very good, and internet and a good knowledge of thermodynamics is enough for Physical, For inorganic, its best to stick to coaching material (not too thick books to ruin your mood, at the same time contains most needed information) , and CBSE as well.
That is all i got , and yes, as pointed out, you will always find some questions of inorganic chem in JEE which you wont be able to solve because they are completely out of course (some single correct and some multi correct), however, if you are sufficiently good in organic and physical, and also as good as you can be in inorganic, then leaving those questions will still save you at 90 marks or so at worst which i think is enough in chem if you perform well in other subjects
i am too going to class 11 and joined FIITJEE . Please Help on the strategy to be followed in these two months(but i will be little distracted from jee preparation due to ntse on 10th may)
I have not appeared in NTSE so I can't help you, sorry. Perhaps you should ask from people who had appeared for NTSE like Shashwat and Krishna. I don't know much people who appeared for NTSE.
In maths Basic Mathematics, AP,GP and HP has been taught. And Trigonometry and Special Series is going on. In Chemistry Mole Concept, Atomic structure is going on. And in Physics Vectors has been taught and they are now teaching Differentiation . What about you?
No summer vacation! As in your school is closed, right?
In FIITJEE, they've taught us (actually revised) Stoichiometry, Vectors and a bit of basic maths (Sets, Inequalities and Logs). In school, we've been taught the same as you have.
And how's Calculus going? You must be enjoying it!
@User 123
–
School hasn't started yet. Actually it is government school and they start session after taking entrance test and announcement of class 10 result. Entrance test has been conducted. I think I would qualify that.
But CBSE 10 results are yet to be announced. I thought that it will be declared today but I think we have to wait for one more day.
@Satvik Pandey
–
I know you'll qualify:) The CBSE results keep getting postponed. Apparently they were supposed to have been released on the 15th of this month! By the way, what's your favourite part of Calculus?
@User 123
–
I didn't get notification for your comment. Sorry for delay in reply. :(
Well, I know very less about calculus. I have studied it as per the requirement in physics. I will tell you my favorite part of calculus after one year, when I would study it systematically . :)
@Krishna Ar
–
Yes! :D It's not hard to get 10 cgpa. I studied mechanics whole year and only one month for boards(SA-2). You guys must have got that too, right? And I am sure none of you studied for 10 boards entire year!
@Satvik Pandey
–
Ya, I got 10, but I didn't study mechanics nor did I study for boards :P
I failed in Math pre-boards and just passed in English and this is my result :P

I think you should try in class 11 also. Bro, you are toooooooo good in maths! You have taken 5 subjects, why do want to study one more subject??
