Brain Teaser....:)

A man who lives on the tenth floor takes the elevator down to the first floor every morning and goes to work. In the evening, when he comes back; on a rainy day, or if there are other people in the elevator, he goes to his floor directly. Otherwise, he goes to the seventh floor and walks up three flights of stairs to his apartment. Can you explain why?

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

He is a dwarf. He can only reach button 7 and on rainy days he takes his umbrella. So he can tap 10 with his umbrella.

He's short, but on rainy days he presses the button with his umbrella. Otherwise he can't reach the 10.

nope :/ it's said that on a rainy day he doesn't use the elevator whatsoever, and this is exactly when he has the umbrella.

Oh, I thought that "went to his floor directly" meant he took the elevator straight to his floor. My apologies!

Mareike W - 6 years, 10 months ago

U r right , Mareike W, The man isn't tall enough to reach the button for 10. On a rainy day, he has an umbrella and can press the correct floor button and if people are in the elevator they can press it for him. Otherwise he can only reach the 7th floor and takes the stairs for the last three floors.

Oh, so I misunderstood the problem and Mareike W understood it right - going to his floor directly means taking the elevator all the way to the top, not going there upstairs.

@Mathh Mathh Yes...

@Anika . Then please edit your problem. 'goes directly' sounds a lot like going there without using any help of a machine.

I've actually seen this riddle before...
