This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Thanks for creating Brilliant.org, @Calvin Lin

The wiki section is a grt feature; after reading it I am very much excited to tackle higher level related problem appearing under 'community post'. Hoping to see more such features and expecting grt changes. Thanks again for Brillian.org.

Soumo Mukherjee - 6 years, 5 months ago

Indeed, that is a newish feature that I am really excited about. I will make an announcement with further details shortly!

Update: Here's the post!

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

@Calvin Lin Thanks sir for making Brilliant, a Brilliant Website!\color{#D61F06}{\text{Brilliant Website!}}

Anuj Shikarkhane - 6 years, 5 months ago

@Calvin Lin: waiting for the picture to get updated...

Mursalin Habib - 6 years, 5 months ago

Patience my young padawan.

Likely tomorrow, else Monday. I was working from home on NYE so that I could organize a NYE party, and today is a holiday (so I'm not heading into the office).

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

Alright, updated!

Sorry, we have a busy week.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

I can't imagine a single day without Brilliant. Thank you for creating such a brilliant tool !!!

Soutrik Bandyopadhyay - 6 years, 5 months ago

Thanks! Congrats on clearing NSEC.

Tell your friends about us :)

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

Yeah sure ! Anything for you sir !

Soutrik Bandyopadhyay - 6 years, 5 months ago

Sir can this feature - ask a question\boxed{ask~ a~ question} box be attached to the wikis , in case if we are unable to understand something or a thing that seems unlogical and that's to be changed

U Z - 6 years, 5 months ago

If you are referring to something that exists on the wiki page, then the best approach currently would be to post a note saying "I don't understand XXX on wiki YYY". It would be helpful to screenshot / copy-paste the relevant section that you have doubts on. This way, others will be able to clarify it and modify as necessary. We will be looking into different approaches in future.

If you are referring to wanting to clarify your doubts about the skill/technique/idea, then similarly you can post a note on it.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

@Calvin Lin

Hi sir, Can you please devise a system by which we can get Notifications whenever someone @mentions us , here on Brilliant and not in our e-Mail account .

I'm asking this because I didn't check my mails today and it so happened that @Adarsh Kumar @mentioned me in a note of his to which I couldn't reach out to .

Please consider this request sir .

Thanks for the same :)

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 3 months ago

Thanks for the suggestion. We are still developing out he notifications system, and will add more functionality to it.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 3 months ago

I'm glad I could help in making Brilliant an even better place :)

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 3 months ago

What do you have in the little cylindrical blue container to the left of your laptop? Carrots?

Agnishom Chattopadhyay - 6 years, 5 months ago

That's my chewable Vitamin C. I'm guilty of popping several a day,

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

I would still recommend carrots...

Agnishom Chattopadhyay - 6 years, 5 months ago

@Agnishom Chattopadhyay What is it with Brilliantians and carrots? Even @Krishna Ar was asking me the other day if I like carrots or not?

Prasun Biswas - 6 years, 5 months ago

@Prasun Biswas Uhm....its actually and Indirect reference to "a bunny" (Guess who? ..... :P ) P.S-(I guess this is what it is meant to be)

Krishna Ar - 6 years, 5 months ago

@Krishna Ar Lel... XD

Prasun Biswas - 6 years, 5 months ago

@Krishna Ar Bunny? I guess Sreejato.

Anuj Shikarkhane - 6 years, 5 months ago

i hope brilliant will rejuvenate all the members in 2015 as well by interacting with interesting problems as earlier.HAPPY NEW YEAR !!.

nibedan mukherjee - 6 years, 5 months ago

Hi sir I have yet another suggestion for the Brilliant Team :)

Is it possible for you guys to upload Video Lectures on certain good topics ? Short ones will do ,though .

It's just a suggestion sir , though you might want to ask others about it . Me and @Andrei Golovanov just talked about it and the both of us like the idea so here I am suggesting it to you !!

Thanks for the same :)

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 3 months ago

Currently, I do not feel that video lectures would be a worthwhile investment of our time. Video lectures will require a lot of resources to implement, in order to get a level of polish and presentation that is equal to the wiki writeups. It is much easier for everyone to be able to explain in writing, as opposed to having to set up a video to record the lesson.

We would also then have to deal with those who have slow internet connects. Just imagine, if this list of text is taking you 2-3 minutes to load, how long would a short 5 min video take to load on your phone / desktop? That would likely make it a feature that most people will not engage with after they saw the first video.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 3 months ago

Yeah , agreed , sir :)

Btw thanks for replying ,sir :)

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 3 months ago

Can u send me a link explaining newton sums please?

Adithya Iyer - 6 years, 5 months ago

It makes me sad that the Newton's Identity Wiki is currently empty. It is definitely on my list of Wikis I would like to see written up. Let me make an appeal and see if some kind soul will help us out :)

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

I'm on it. I was about to ask the same thing earlier but he beat me to it! I think I can manage to explain it (although it'd be a great help if someone could tell me the outline of writing a wiki page, since it's much different than writing a solution to a single problem).

Prasun Biswas - 6 years, 5 months ago

@Prasun Biswas Don't worry about that, we will help to clean up the formatting and make it look good.

I think that the relevent sections will be - introduction to newton's identities and why we care about them - The quadratic / cubic equation case (which is easier to understand) - The general case - Examples of its use in typical settings.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

Done. I haven't written the general form yet and I plan to do that within the week since I'd be a little busy with some school projects that I have to submit before 3rd Jan, i.e., tomorrow. :P

By the way, the example that I provided, I haven't checked if the answer came out correct or not. It'd be nice if you could check the answer and undo any arithmetical mistakes I may have made.

Prasun Biswas - 6 years, 5 months ago

@Prasun Biswas This is a great start! I made a few changes, and added some links to other wiki pages. I'm excited to see more when you are done with your school projects.

I verified that the answer is correct.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

@Calvin Lin Sir, can I post a wiki on physics topics like light and electricity and make their quiz too.

tanveen dhingra - 6 years, 5 months ago

You are certainly welcome to post a wiki on a new topic, by selecting "Post something - New Wiki". We do not allow members to create the quiz, as we want to maintain a standard of quality for the practice quizes. You can post problems directly though, which would be equally helpful to the community.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

Calvin Lin Sir,I wanted to Ask If there Is A feature Of Multiple Answer Correct On Brilliant??

Vraj Mehta - 6 years, 5 months ago

There are no plans for that feature, because it will be extremely complicated to explain and interact with, compared to the simple MCQ version that we currently have.

Given that MCQ questions now allow for 8 options, you could recreate something like that for 3 statements, and the ask "which of these statments are true", with 8=23 8 = 2^3 options listing out all the various possibilities. If see that many people actively want to do this, then we will reconsider having such a complicated system.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

Sir sorry but I did'nt liked this avatar of brilliant

Reasons-

  • Very cozy and compact look

  • Unable to distinguish between a question and a note

  • Feeling like working at office

Previous brilliant was better.

The format of displaying is not good.

Thank you. Hoping previous one comes fast.

U Z - 6 years, 4 months ago

Agreed, the Community page looks very dull and I also agree with your 2nd point .

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 4 months ago

I liked idea of selecting levels on the Community page, but There are no marks on which question is solved by me or not.

Vraj Mehta - 6 years, 4 months ago

If you look carefully you'll find that the title of the questions you haven't solved appear bolder(black) while titles of those you have solved are fainter(greyish) .

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 4 months ago

@A Former Brilliant Member I saw That But Previous one was better

Vraj Mehta - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Vraj Mehta @Vraj Mehta @Azhaghu Roopesh M Yes we are aware that the current situation is not ideal. As mentioned in my reply,

We are working on making it clearer if you solved a problem or not. Right now, the only difference is that the title is not in bold.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 4 months ago

Thanks for the feedback!

It certainly isn't great that you feel like you are working at an office, and that is not the intention at all.

We are working on making it clearer if you solved a problem or not. Right now, the only difference is that the title is not in bold.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 4 months ago

Sir take it ligthly as you and your team is constantly working hard to improve each and every section of brilliant community . Put me in a category of a critic . This critic only has a suggestion that the previous brilliant format was good comparative to the present.

Thanks. A great site

U Z - 6 years, 4 months ago

With regards to "Feeling like working at office", does adding images to the problem display help improve that?

(Image removed)

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 4 months ago

Yes definitely , now feeling like sitting on previous Brilliant.org. Thanks , for taking it seriously.

U Z - 6 years, 4 months ago

Sir, I would like to know why isnt there any point grading system for Chemistry problems?? is it possible to have it there also?? if so how?

Harshvardhan Mehta - 6 years, 4 months ago

There are currently no plans for a point grading system for Chemistry of Biology problems as yet. Though, things may change!

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 3 months ago

What is a good way to get started with quantitative finance?

Agnishom Chattopadhyay - 6 years, 3 months ago

As with any other (developed) topic on the site:

1) Start off by trying problems that are Level 2-3.
If you can (comfortably) solve them, then that indicates that you should know most of the basics of the topic / chapter. The higher level questions in that topic / chapter will likely involve deeper theory, more in-depth problem solving skills, or a combination of knowledge across different skills.
If you are unable to solve them, then that indicates that you should work on the basics of the material. Start by going to the (Quantitative Finance) Skill Map, and read up the various wikis. Ensure that you can do the Level 1-3 problems attached at the end (I'm working on adding problems across all of the wikis, so bear with me) as a way to test your understanding. After that, look at the Level 4-5 problems and see if you can apply what you have learnt.

2) Review the material after you have done a problem
Even if you have successfully answered a question, look at the solutions and see if there are ways to improve how you approach the problem. Especially if you had a difficult time answering the question, see how others were thinking about it.
If there are no solutions, add your own, and I will give you feedback.
For example, in Quick Bond Calculation, the idea is that if we know the coupon rate = discount/interest rate, then we immediately know the price, because the coupons perfectly compensate for the lost time value. There is no use a spreadsheet, or the standard formulas, to calculate the price in this scenario.

3) Come up with a system to properly file and understand what you have learnt.
There are several different takeaways from each problem, and everyone would have their own interpretation. Take what you consider important, and see how it fits into your current understanding of the topic. If it does not fit well, then spend some time pondering about it and see it's relevance.
Note that not every piece of information is (immediately) useful and/or relevant.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 3 months ago

Thanks, that will be helpful

Agnishom Chattopadhyay - 6 years, 3 months ago

Can we Improve features in disputing Box ? I mean when we dispute to a problem then it does not notify to problem creator in his notification's chart , and also when someone add comment's in disput box then it doesn't notify directly in notification's box . May be I'am wrong , but i think currently we don't have such feature . Am I right ? I feel great if we can make such feature . Thank's Sir! @Calvin Lin

Deepanshu Gupta - 6 years, 3 months ago

We are working on improving the reporting feature.
Currently, the problem creator will receive an email when there is a report. Any comments in the discussions will also result in an email to all the relevant parties.
We will be adding notifications to it once the feature is stabilized.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 3 months ago

Sir, can you please help me by suggesting some material for studying(except the brilliant wikis, of course). I am interested in learning math to its depths. Thank you.

Mehul Arora - 6 years, 5 months ago

I expect the Brilliant wikis to quickly become the best place to learn about math in depth. Not only will it have detailed explanations of the concepts along with worked examples, there will also be relevant problems for you to try and improve your ability.

Given the contributions by the community in the past 3 months, I am excited for what 2015 will bring :)

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

Why a laptop and a desktop both at a time?

Is the pen's company brand- Uniball

U Z - 6 years, 5 months ago

I 'm not as informative as sir about the sources but according to me khan academy is the best place to learn and practice problems there itself...And also you can just sign in udacity to learn about some programming skills . So, in my opinion these places are good enough for a beginner as well as for an intermediate . And also brilliant wikis are cool..

Vighnesh Raut - 6 years, 5 months ago

I have already signed in to Khan academy. Thanks and please tell of any more sources you know

Mehul Arora - 6 years, 5 months ago

How do you latex a "therefore" symbol because I can't find it on the Wiki Formatting guide ?

Curtis Clement - 6 years, 5 months ago

\therefore

If you see an equation in LaTeX, you can hover over the image to see the corresponding code.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

Daniel Liu - 6 years, 5 months ago

where do u live presently ??

Vighnesh Raut - 6 years, 5 months ago

San Francisco, which is where the Brilliant office is based. Most of us are in San Fran.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

cool....

Vighnesh Raut - 6 years, 5 months ago

I just remembered something that I wanted to ask you since a long time. Actually, I was wondering how would one apply to work for Brilliant as a staff member? Is there any other forum or website from where one would apply for the job.

Prasun Biswas - 6 years, 5 months ago

If you look at our about page, you will see a list of job openings. You can also simply send me your resume, and I will forward it along.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

Well, I'm only 16 at the moment, so... :P But, I was thinking of applying after I finish my studies.

Prasun Biswas - 6 years, 5 months ago

@Prasun Biswas Right, the same will (most likely) apply then. You can go to our about page, which will have a link to the jobs page. This is generally true of most companies (or at least those that have open positions).
Alternatively, you can send me your resume and cover letter, and I will forward it on accordingly.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

@Calvin Lin Ok, thanks for your time. :)

Prasun Biswas - 6 years, 5 months ago

Sir , when we edit a wiki does our name come in the contributors

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 5 months ago

We display the "Top 3 editors" of a wiki. The order depends on the quantity and quality of the edit.

If 3 names have already been displayed, then making 1 edit to change a typo is unlikely to get your name on.

Slight caveat: To encourage submissions from the community, staff contributors (if any) are listed at the end.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

I am giving the proof of the fundamental theorem of calculus in the wiki will my name be displayed

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 5 months ago

@Rajdeep Dhingra Given that there are currently only 2 names on it, if you make an improvement, then your name will appear as one of the "(Top 3) Contributors".

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

@Calvin Lin I have edited the Wiki check out the new edited wiki

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 5 months ago

@Rajdeep Dhingra Thanks!.

Note that when typing in LaTeX, you need only place brackets around the equations, instead of the entire chunk of text. This allows plain text to be displayed normally, instead of being italicised with forced spacing. We can type equations in line like x+2=6 x + 2 = 6 , or on their own line like so:

x2+y2=z2 x^2 + y^2 = z^2

You can hover over with your mouse to see the LaTeX that produces these equations.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

Sir till now I am not able to solve this problem

17 solvers but no solutions , can you and the solvers please provide me any hint ?

U Z - 6 years, 5 months ago

Looks like a standard 3-D coordiante-ish geometry problem.

There are 2 planes that the 3 circles are tangential to. Along with the 3 planes containing the 3 circles, we obtain a equilateral base frustum in which each side is tilted at 45 45 ^ \circ to the base. Complete the frustum to a pyramid, and find the dimensions of the triangular face. It has an incircle of radius 10, and we can then calculate the distance between the 2 points of tangency.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

Sir, I am making a wiki on logarithm please tell me how to add existing community posts.

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 5 months ago

You are only able to edit your own posts/problems. To do so, at the "dot dot dot" menu in the lower right, select "edit problem", and then select the corresponding topic/subtopic/chapter/skill.

You are not allowed to edit other people's posts/problems.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

@Calvin Lin i wanted to know how to add already made posts to wiki

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 5 months ago

@Rajdeep Dhingra As stated above, you are only able to edit your own posts/problems.

To edit a problem, select the "dot dot dot" menu in the lower right, select "edit problem", and then select the corresponding topic/subtopic/chapter/skill.

To edit a note, select "Edit this note", and then select the corresponding topic/subtopic/chapter/skill.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

Hi Calvin I wanted to know how one develops his intuition on these kind of problems

https://brilliant.org/problems/add-a-reciprocal-repeat/?group=SXpuCqeOEN5w&ref_id=558110

I mean how do we know how to bound certain functions etc... any tips, books?

Thanks

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 5 months ago

Practice and exposure to such problems would help you come up with different ways of approaching it. I see that the problem is placed in Induction - Inequalities, so working through those problems will help you improve this specific skill. Currently there isn't a lot of material on that page, but over time that will change.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

Hi Cavlin sir i want to know. What are the requirements to become a moderator?

Rajat Bisht - 6 years, 5 months ago

Moderators help to improve the experience on Brilliant, by doing things like improving problems, actively promoting problems which they think others should see, removing trashy comments written by trolls, etc.

Candidates are selected based on their behavior in the community. They should be active exemplary members who are helpful in their interactions with others. An example of such an action is to contribute solutions and then engage with those who have questions and help them to clarify.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

Thanks sir. Now i got my next target.

Rajat Bisht - 6 years, 5 months ago

Truly said - Murlasin habib and Agnishom Chattopadhay are making my experience on Brilliant unforgettable

U Z - 6 years, 5 months ago

hello people i have recently woken up to the fact that Brilliant is an excellent place for enriching problem solving skills but i have found myself stumped by the difficulty of the higher level problems any ideas to facilitate my improvement would be much appreciated

Atif Farooq - 6 years, 5 months ago

Check out the wikis! They are a work in progress, but there are several great articles that will help you improve your problems solving skills!

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

Thankyou Sir

Atif Farooq - 6 years, 5 months ago

Calvin Lin sir,I've got a suggestion.I think that whenever Brilliant users search for problems on the search menu,it should be written ''Incorrect,Not answered,Correct''etc besides a problem they have either got wrong, haven't answered or have got right.Like it is written besides the problems on the community page. Please reply

Abdur Rehman Zahid - 6 years, 5 months ago

Thanks! That is a good idea. We will take that into consideration when we improve the search functionality :)

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

Sir can I take print out of some notes and wikis?

Just curious - Why a laptop and a desktop simultaneously?

U Z - 6 years, 5 months ago

Certainly, you are free to print out notes and wikis. If you are sharing it with others, I would appreciate if you tell them that it's from Brilliant.org, as I'm sure they would be excited to find out more.

I mainly use a laptop for the convenience of it. The desktop screen provides me with much more screen space to work with. Screen real estate is really important, I had even considered using 2 huge screens to avoid toggling back and forth. For example, I often have 10 tabs open in each browser window that I use, because I need to manage data across a wide variety of tasks.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

Thanks for sharing , moreover I have uploaded some problems of anastisya romonovia , sandeep bhardwaj etc with the tag brilliant.org on my gmail account , so my more friends come - but only 3 have arrived.

I tried to copy the text to take a print out but latex is not copied . Please help

U Z - 6 years, 5 months ago

@U Z Latex equations are displayed as an image, as that allows it to quickly load on a page.

The easiest approach would be to print the page directly.
Alternatively, you can print screen the relevant portions and compile them into a document.
If you want a word for word copy, you can save the images and use them where missing.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

@U Z Maybe you could share the problem via facebook or take a screen shot.

Sudeep Salgia - 6 years, 5 months ago

@Krishna Sharma As your comment about the bug wasn't on topic with the note, I am moving the discussion here.

Can you report the problem, stating "I answered correctly, but you marked me wrong", and provide the screenshot? That will help us troubleshoot what is happening. Thanks!

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

Initially I answered 'none of these' but was marked wrong, later after reporting I got a mail that 'your answer was correct even though we marked you wrong....' when I clicked to the problem link then you know what happened(screenshot).

Krishna Sharma - 6 years, 5 months ago

Thanks for clearing that up.

Yes, we are aware that when we fix answers, there can be display issues like what you saw, where you get a (cached) banner of "Nice try ....", while we display that you chose the correct MCQ answer / real number answer. That is why we generate the email as the confirmation that the answer has indeed been updated correctly.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

Hey calvin Srry for being rude. Thanks for removing the dispute box.

tanveen dhingra - 6 years, 5 months ago

No worries, I understand where you are coming from. As the creator of the question, you believe that your problem is correctly stated, and is crystal clear to you. However, I have to play devil's advocate, and take the view of the common person who sees your problem and fails to understand what you want because they are not a mind reader.

Your problem is now greatly improved, and those who come across it will be able to solve it or understand your solution, instead of just thinking that you are wrong and ignoring it.

I'm looking forward to seeing you post more problems, and improve over time!

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

Sir, I posted a problem named "Lines and Triangles Living together", only 5% were able to solve it. But it was given level 2. Can you plz update its level ?

jaikirat sandhu - 6 years, 4 months ago

That's because only 20 people have looked at the problem, and few were interested in answering it. Look at improving the phrasing of the problem to making it easier to understand and more interesting to work on.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 4 months ago

Thank you, Sir for your advice. I have another problem Sir. It's been almost two weeks since I posted a problem named "Lucky Bird Hunter", and it has not been given any level yet.

jaikirat sandhu - 6 years, 4 months ago

Sir, its almost 15 days, since I posted my problem "Lucky Bird Hunter", but whenever I open it, its level says "Level Pending". Can u plz check Sir

jaikirat sandhu - 6 years, 4 months ago

As explained before

That's because only 20 people have looked at the problem, and few were interested in answering it. Look at improving the phrasing of the problem to making it easier to understand and more interesting to work on.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Sandeep Bhardwaj @Calvin Lin @Steven Zheng @megh choksi. sir please tell me books to practise JEE Advance and Main physics,Maths with good questions. Theory less but problems more. Please help

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 4 months ago

For Physics, first the concepts must be completely clear. In other subjects, one can solve problems only if the concept is clear. But in Physics, Concepts are clear, if the problems can be solved. One Book that I recommend (I had also used at your age), is HC VERMA and IE IRODOV. Then Shri Balaji Publications' Anurag Mishra is very useful, once the above mentioned books are solved.(Don't try this book before those mentioned above). For Maths, Arihant Publications are the best. Best Of Luck.

I am able to tell this because I also used these books and qualified JEE Advanced at the age of 15.

jaikirat sandhu - 6 years, 4 months ago

I have finished HC verma. Do you know any more books.

You gave the JEE exam at a younger age. How?Are you in IIT?

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Rajdeep Dhingra If you have solved HC Verma, well and good. People say DC Pandey of Arihant Publications is also a very good book but I personally haven't solved it. Yes, I am studying in IIT Kanpur. I got AIR 2542 in IIT JEE 2012.

jaikirat sandhu - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Jaikirat Sandhu I have finished DC pandey as well

By the way Nice rank for giving IIT at a younger age

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Rajdeep Dhingra Thank you.

jaikirat sandhu - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Jaikirat Sandhu You must try IE IRODOV as well.

jaikirat sandhu - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Jaikirat Sandhu Congratulations! How did you started learning physics?

U Z - 6 years, 4 months ago

@U Z Sir do you know any books for Physics and Maths

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Rajdeep Dhingra Please don't call me sir. Not good at physics.

Books I am having,

  • Amit.M.Agarwal - Playing with graphs(fun to solve)

  • Amit.M.Agarwal - Calculas

  • Mathematical Circles - Dmitri Fomin( you are now just 13 so please do this first , don't do with a competitive mind, solve with interest, it will definitely help you)

  • MTG magazine(Mathematics today)

  • Brilliant tutorials postal guidance course

  • physics only have H.C Verma and NCERT textbooks.

  • Now as you have solved H.C Verma at age of 13 , so now do organic chemistry (I think you will able to do) , if you are used to it now at age of 16 you will find yourself at college level in chemistry.

  • Brilliant.org , problemsolvers.club(recently I found) proofathon.org and JOMO.

  • Highly recommended

Don't develop a competitive environment right now(for jee) just enjoy solving and learning , but do have a competitive mind for olympiads. See this video

and don't forget to ask deepanshu gupta , agnishom chattophadyay and Murlasin habib

U Z - 6 years, 4 months ago

@U Z sir please tell me books to practise JEE Advance and Main physics,Maths with good questions. Theory less but problems more. Please help Please tell me the books you use @Deepanshu Gupta @Agnishom Chattopadhyay @Mursalin Habib

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 4 months ago

@U Z Hi megh choksi , can you give some advice for studying Physics for JEE since I'm quite weak at it ? Please don't suggest any books since I have quite a lot of them , DC Pandey(complete series) , HC Verma , materials from my coaching class IIT Ashram and yeah of course Irodov too .

Thanks for the same .

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 4 months ago

@A Former Brilliant Member Irodov is a good one...

Nihar Mahajan - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Nihar Mahajan Which class are you in?

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Rajdeep Dhingra 9th.

Nihar Mahajan - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Nihar Mahajan You meant going to 9th in April or going to 10th in April.

Sorry for confusion.

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Rajdeep Dhingra going to 10th.

Nihar Mahajan - 6 years, 4 months ago

@U Z @megh choksi Please tell me from where did you get Mathematical Circles - Dmitri Fomin

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 4 months ago

@U Z Try my new problems as they involve more than one concept. "CAN WE REACH ESCAPE VELOCITY" "HANGING SHM" "NO NAME FOR THIS PROBLEM"

jaikirat sandhu - 6 years, 4 months ago

@U Z @megh choksi Please could you tell me whether Mathematical circles has many questions of geometry related to circles .Are they challenging

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Rajdeep Dhingra No basic level.

U Z - 6 years, 4 months ago

@U Z you meant there is no basic level or 'they are basic'

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Rajdeep Dhingra No for challenging one's , I have provided the link for mathematical circles too , have'nt seen yet?

U Z - 6 years, 4 months ago

@U Z Do you know any challenging book?

Thanks,anyways

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Rajdeep Dhingra Well , problem solving strategies by arthur engel is a good one..

Nihar Mahajan - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Nihar Mahajan Do you any good book for class 9th and 10th geometry - tough problems?

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Rajdeep Dhingra For number theory - elementary number theory by david burton.

Mathematical circles make your basic principles very strong.

All rounder - problem solving strategies by arthur engel , the art and craft of problem solving by paul , challenge and thrill of precollege mathematics.

Physics- I prefer H C Verma , Irodov

Chemistry - Viraf Dalal

Nihar Mahajan - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Rajdeep Dhingra You must try IE IRODOV as well

jaikirat sandhu - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Rajdeep Dhingra Try my new problems as they involve more than one concept.

"CAN WE REACH ESCAPE VELOCITY" "HANGING SHM" "NO NAME FOR THIS PROBLEM"

jaikirat sandhu - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Rajdeep Dhingra You can also try my problem on BRILLIANT, "CAN WE REACH ESCAPE VELOCITY" to check your concepts in Mechanics. You should try to solve Deepanshu Gupta's questions on brilliant.

jaikirat sandhu - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Thato Mthethwa Hi Thato, you piqued my curiosity. Are you organizing a mini contest for your "Math seminar" friends? If so, I would like to hear more about it!

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 4 months ago

Yes, but it's just a fun activity only for my class mates.

Thato Mthethwa - 6 years, 4 months ago

That's exciting! Do you (and your classmates) enjoy your experience on Brilliant?

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Calvin Lin Sir you don't need to ask that question at all? In fact, there's no one here on Brilliant who doesn't like it here . Also I recommended Brilliant to some of my friends Rajat Bhagat,Punit Kalariya,Naitik Choksi,Purvik Kalariya,Manoj Madigeri and Yash Gattani and they all joined (but aren't currently active due to our Board Exams and JEE Prep) but they all enjoyed it here and will be back soon once our exams are over .

Thanks for making Brilliant such a wonderful and interactive place Calvin Lin ,Suyeon Khim ,Peter Taylor , Arron Kau and other staff(sorry if I missed out on a few) .

Sir i have created a Wiki but i am not able to enter a table via latex or either upload an image in its place.. can you please help me with it, the image is below:

Wiki Topic : Chebyshev's Formula

Image Link: Image

Harshvardhan Mehta - 6 years, 4 months ago

Thanks! It looks like an interesting read :)

The easiest way to upload an image to wiki, is to "Edit this page" and then "Upload an Image" button to upload any image files that you have.

This way, you do not need to check what url you are linking to.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 4 months ago

yes I have tried it but it is saying that brilliant is facing a problem connecting to its servers

Harshvardhan Mehta - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Harshvardhan Mehta Hm, I will look into the "problem connecting to its servers". I believe that the issue is that the file which you're trying to upload is too huge. Try reducing the size / resolution of it.
Alternatively, it could be the format of your file. Do you know format it is in? We currently only accept png, jpg, gif, and tell you that other file formats are not accepted.

In the meantime, I have uploaded the image for you and placed it at the bottom of the page. You can move it accordingly.

Note that we do not allow for "Latex usepackage" or the "tabular environment". You can use the array environment to create tables. For example:

123abc \begin{array} { l l l } 1 & 2 & 3 \\ \hline a & b & c \\ \end{array}

If you are unsure how, just leave the image up, and we will convert it into Latex.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 4 months ago

@A Former Brilliant Member ya it has been made and thanks a lot bro...

Harshvardhan Mehta - 6 years, 4 months ago

Hi sir, I've posted a wiki on Gamma Function . I understand that it is very short but I don't have much time to completely fill it up .I'll do it sooner or later but it is a good topic that everyone must know about, so can you ask some of the moderators to fill it up . I've added the most basic and important points regarding Gamma Function , so the wiki is currently lagging in some Examples and some Community posts only .

Thanks for the same .

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 4 months ago

Do you guys know any book for Geometry. Please help????

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 4 months ago

Sir thanks for creating brilliant I have a suggestion of adding chat column so that we can chat to followers and other people

Naman Kapoor - 6 years, 4 months ago

You're welcome!

Thanks for the suggestion. We will consider adding chat.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 4 months ago

Sir you can add all the wikis on the homepage so every new comer can know about thanks for considering my suggestion and creating brilliant

Naman Kapoor - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Naman Kapoor Thanks! We are planning on adding Wikis to the community tab.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 4 months ago

Is there a page or a way to look up/post proofs to solve?

Jason Hughes - 6 years, 4 months ago

You could post it as a note.

We currently do not have problems that are posed as proof-based as yet. I would love to be able to have that, and we will be working towards that!

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 4 months ago

Ankit, as mentioned previously, the only possible values of n are 1 and 2. Please stop reposting wrong problems.
Please check that you are receiving emails from us about reports on your problem. If not, please confirm your email address.

@Ankit Jain

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 4 months ago

Hi @Calvin Lin sir, I have a suggestion . How about adding a sound option to notifications ? Since many a time I have faced this problem while I am busy solving a problem and then a notification comes but then I am not able to notice it on time .

It would be better if there would a least be a beep ! sound along with the notifications so that we may know that we got a message from our friends .

Just a suggestion, Please think about it sir !!

Thanks in advance sir .

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 4 months ago

Thanks for the suggestion. I will forward that along.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Calvin Lin Sir, How to become a moderator? Cause I want to become one.

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 4 months ago

See my reply to Rajat Bisht

Moderators help to improve the experience on Brilliant, by doing things like improving problems, actively promoting problems which they think others should see, removing trashy comments written by trolls, etc.
Candidates are selected based on their behavior in the community. They should be active exemplary members who are helpful in their interactions with others. An example of such an action is to contribute solutions and then engage with those who have questions and help them to clarify.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 4 months ago

Calvin, what's the policy on citing references found on the internet? As an example, in this problem

Interesting formula from combinatorics

I would have liked to cite the paper that has the integral that leads to one proof of the identity. There's a wealth of information that can be cited on the internet. Is there a Brilliant posted guidelines about that? If there isn't, maybe there should be one?

By "cite", I mean to provide the link.

Michael Mendrin - 6 years, 4 months ago

We do not have a policy on how to cite papers.

If you simply link directly to it, that would be fine.

If you want to reproduce significant parts of it (e.g. screenshots), please state where you obtained it from, and also provide a link to the article where possible.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 4 months ago

Ah, okay, then I'll feel free to post any relevant links in my answers. Now, but I think there is some of a policy when posting wiki pages, but I think I can look that one up. By the way, nice answer to that "Interesting formula from combinatorics", I don't think I would have found that approach myself. Combinatorics is not my strong suit.

Michael Mendrin - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Michael Mendrin We do not yet have a policy for posting wiki pages on our site. We are working on ways to make it easier to link to a wiki page, instead of having to look it up and then use the markdown link. This will likely take a while before we release it though. As always, when posting content to another site, we would appreciate a link back to the relevant piece of content.

Yes, that particular question seemed like a strong candidate for generating functions, due to the convolution on the left, and the simplicity of the function on the right. Technically, it should always work, but the hard part is hunting down the specific generating function to use and then manipulate.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 4 months ago

I have answered a few questions of quantitative finance (beta) section... Why isn't my profile showing my level in quantitative finance section??

Vighnesh Raut - 6 years, 4 months ago

As with any new topic, you need to do several problems, before your level is determined. Keep on answering problems.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 4 months ago

Following up on this, I see that you have obtained a level, and it is now displayed in your profile.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 4 months ago

yep...Thnx for your help

Vighnesh Raut - 6 years, 4 months ago

Sir,sometimes whenever I try to post solutions, when I press the ''publish'' button,it instead deletes my solution. Please fix this because I have wanted to write a solution to a problem but this bug prevents me from doing so.

P.S:I don't know if this is connected to the bug or not, but it always seems to happen when I am writing the first solution to a given problem.

EDIT:I just took a look at the aforementioned problem, and the solution's there!

Abdur Rehman Zahid - 6 years, 4 months ago

Hm, this is the first time I'm hearing about this issue.

  1. Can you link me to the problem that you're talking about? I do not know what "the aforementioned problem" is.
  2. To check, after you click preview, did you remember to click "publish"?
    [Image lost: http://cl.ly/image/3F0v2M3s1f2W/download/Screen%20Shot%202015-02-15%20at%2010.25.14%20AM.png]

  3. If it happens again, can you please link me to the problem, and I would be able to take a look from there.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 4 months ago

Yes sir, the problem occured with me too. When I click on publishpublish,my solution gets deleted and it says "no solutions have been posted yet......".But when I revisited my solution next day it was present there.

mudit bansal - 6 years, 3 months ago

@Calvin Lin Who spots me helping people. And would make me a moderator

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 4 months ago

I select moderators as and when needed.

There is no way to guarantee that you will be selected.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 3 months ago

@Abdou Abdou Your problems were deleted because they were non-sensical / not well explained what you were asking for.

For example, in consecutive standing, you said "3 numbers from your mind", but offered the options of "O-O-O" and "X-X-X".

In the impossible puzzle, you asked for multiple questions like "What are the two chosen numbers ?" and "What would be the the third guy's conclusion if this conversation took place from the fifth line instead ?", but gave an answer of 0.

As such, your problems have been deleted. You can refer to the reports to help you improve your posts.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 3 months ago

Sir, I would like to know why isnt there any point as well as level grading system for Chemistry problems?? is it possible to have it there also?? if so how?

Harshvardhan Mehta - 6 years, 3 months ago

Hi sir, here's the link to a wiki by my friend Kishlaya to which I had decided to add a proof , but later on I realized that that the proof had an error so I deleted the proof . But still my Profile Pic appears in the wiki contributors list , which shouldn't be there since I haven't contributed to the wiki(as of yet ) .

Can you remove my name(i.e. the pic) from that list ,sir?

Thanks sir .

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 3 months ago

sir,I want to contribute to differential equation variable separable wiki but finding difficult to write, format, understand the body of the wiki. Please help me with these basics.

mudit bansal - 6 years, 3 months ago

Just open post a new wiki (It already has some basic syntax) and click preview. You'll know what code does what.

Pranjal Jain - 6 years, 3 months ago

Don't worry if you are unfamiliar with the syntax. We can help to clear it up. Just start typing away, so that the community can benefit from your contributions!

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 3 months ago

Ok thanks I'm going to write one.

mudit bansal - 6 years, 3 months ago

Check the problem I disputed

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 3 months ago

I generally give the problem creator 1-2 days to respond, before I actively take any action. I would prefer for the problem creator to fix the issue, instead of having me to step in every single time and do some long-distance mind reading.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 3 months ago

If moderators are going to change the wording of my problems, I should atleast get notified. It irritates me to see that some of the moderators edit my problem and in doing so erase some vital data that the problem had. For example, my latest problem Can we save Agnish? was modified by someone and that person erased the main data that the person solving the problem would need, i.e., the damage values and mass of Agnish. Also, the info that only 3 shots were fired was removed. I had to edit it once again. If I hadn't seen it in time, a good problem would've been reported by several members.

If nothing else, they can atleast leave a comment in my messageboard notifying me of the changes they make on my problems. I don't write much problems and things like this demotivates me from writing more.

Prasun Biswas - 6 years, 3 months ago

I want to add that moderators aren't supposed to heavily edit problems. Their editing privileges are supposed to be used to improve formatting or making minor edits.

If a problem requires heavy editing, we are supposed to report the problem and ask the problem creator for further clarification.

So whoever edited your problem wasn't following the moderator guidelines.

Mursalin Habib - 6 years, 3 months ago

We were in the midst of modifying the problem as it could be deemed as a personal attack,

I have deleted the problem. Please do not make personal targets of individuals. It also does not help that your profile pic depicts a troll.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 3 months ago

By any chance was that Agnish guy me?

Agnishom Chattopadhyay - 6 years, 3 months ago

@Agnishom Chattopadhyay Maybe. Maybe not. :P

Prasun Biswas - 6 years, 3 months ago

It wasn't any form of attack whatsoever. It was just a humorous problem which didn't indicate anyone in particular. You deleting my problem makes me sad. :(

Prasun Biswas - 6 years, 3 months ago

@Prasun Biswas Repost it, where you are not killing out a particular person for whatever reason. Use a more generic name :)

Don't be sad. Here's a cookie for you

Hi! A couple of days ago, when I was solving number theory problems on here, my ratings went up to level "3" three times! Just now, my ratings went up to "3" again! Do you know what's going on? Thank you!

Nadia Jo - 6 years, 5 months ago

Your ratings fluctuate as you solve / fail to solve problems in each topic. To find out your ratings, check the stats page.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

Sir, so you are saying that I can go from Level 5 to Level 3 !!!

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 5 months ago

@A Former Brilliant Member Yes of course. Your abilities can, and will, change over time.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

@Calvin Lin No sir, what I was asking was that If I don't answer Level 5 questions and solve only level 2,3 questions OR if stay away from Brilliant(I'll try my best not to !!!) will my ratings (and hence my Level in the various topics) change ?

Thanks for the same sir

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 5 months ago

@A Former Brilliant Member No, I did not say that, nor imply that at all. I said that it is possible for you to go from level 5 to level 3, but I did not specify how.

If you constantly answer problem incorrectly, then your level will drop over time.

If as a level 5, you only answer level 2, 3 questions, but you do so correctly each time, then your rating will not decrease. It will likely not increase by much either.
If, as a level 5, you constantly answer level 2, 3 questions incorrectly, then yes your ratings will decrease, as it indicates to us that you are having difficulty with some basic material.
If you stay away from Brilliant, you ratings (currently) will not decrease.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

@Calvin Lin Thank you very much sir and sorry for being the nuisance I have been (for you) lately .

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 5 months ago

Ok, thank you.

Nadia Jo - 6 years, 5 months ago

You can see that all of the problems say "Level pending (100 points)". What that indicates is that we are still trying to determine the level of the problem, and have not had sufficient information as yet to do so. I've shared 2 of your problems, which should help give it a boost.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 5 months ago

well thanks a lot for it..

Harshvardhan Mehta - 6 years, 5 months ago

Hi sir, can you tell me when is Brilliant's birthday ? Always wanted to ask you this , just kept on forgetting !!

@Calvin Lin Please reply sir, since I'm very much interested in knowing it !!!

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 4 months ago

Calvin Lin Sir My 2 questions have not been given a level they are

1.Vel-displace-accel-problem

2.integration-mannia

Rajdeep Dhingra - 6 years, 4 months ago

That's because very few people have looked at the problem, and fewer were interested in answering them. Look at improving the phrasing of the problem to making it easier to understand and more interesting to work on.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 4 months ago

Sir My 1 questions have not been given a level they are Click Here
