Can energy be converted into mass?

We all think that matter is some form of condensed and stable form of energy .....but if energy is stable in that form then why should it transform from one kind of energy to another......well i find it very non intuative . then by einstien's E=MC^2 relation we can reverse energy into matter..... if it is created into matter then will it form atoms so that it is stable or will it form noble gases?? I dont know!!

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

einstein's equation just gives the condensed form of energy in a matter.if we could extract the energies it would be a milestone in understanding matter energy physics.

Can energy be converted into mass? Theoretically : yes (because mass and energy are equivalent). Have we already done it? Yes. In particle accelerators, scientists have caused high energy photons (light particles i.e energy) to transform into electrons and positrons (anti-electrons). Google 'pair production'. Can we do it on large scales? Unfortunately (or fortunately!) no. You can very easily calculate how much energy would be necessary to create a body of mass equal to a marble (Yes, a LOT of energy. How would you get that much energy together?) Don't say anti-matter because you'll essentially be doing and undoing the same thing. So the answer to your question would be : yes. Sorry for the long answer.
