Can we go into future?

We know about the equation E=mc2E = mc^2 where EE is energy, mm is mass and cc is velocity of light. We know that any mass can be converted into energy if we travel it at the speed of the square of the speed of light. It still keeps us in the present now what if the speed increases beyond this? Is it possible for us to go into future? Even if we increase speed that much we would merely become an energy because of the equation but would that energy go into future? Is it possible to somehow create a machine which can prevent us from becoming an energy amd take us to the future? Something like a time machine? It is just a weird doubt. Please put across your thoughts if you find this interesting.

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Ahem, ahem....

Speed is defined to have a maximum value being the speed of light. Beyond that, speed doesn't exist. Furthermore, the correct formula is E2=m2c4+p2c2E^2=m^2c^4 + p^2c^2, where pp is the object's momentum.

Isn't that the energy -momentum relation, what do you want to convey from that? Plz explain!

Ahem.. Ahem... something in my throat plz tolerate for a minute... ahme..ahem.. its clear now. Ok now to the point thanks! You are repeating the same point. Does not help.

Nothing is faster than speed of light by definition.

The fact that E=Mc^2 is because of it.

@A Former Brilliant Member I am telling if we can increase our speed beyond it can we go?

@Ashish Menon According to Einstein, Space and Time are bounded to each other with a constant that is light..Space and Time bends itself to keep speed of light constant..Due to this fact nothing in the universe can reach 100% speed of light..Even if the object reaches a speed equal to c, than time becomes Infinite and this is not possible..

You are saying that if we travel with a speed equal to c^2 than can we go to future? If we reach even the speed equal to c than there will be no time for us..So how can we say that we will go to future with a speed of c^2.. If we want to go to future than there is only one way that is through singularity present in black hole..At singularity time stops and maybe it can take us to a new universe..

Feel free to correct me..I am just an explorer who likes this space-time theories..:D

@Sagar Shah Nice +1!

@Sagar Shah Mathematically we might be able to surpass the speed of light. What if expand the space behind our space-craft and contract the space in front of our space-craft i.e create a wave in the the fabric of space and our ship travels in region of flat sense. Than we would have surpassed the speed of light that is bound to move on the curvature of space. Also we would not have surpassed the speed of light in local sense i.e the speed of light inside the flat region of space will still be more than the speed of the space-craft. You can click here to read more about it. This is also known as alcubierre drive.

@Rishi Sharma How are you going to create the fuel from which you will bend space time , anti matter is not a resource available in the nature .

@Sabhrant Sachan That's the catch. You actually require Exotic matter and negative energy for space-time bending. It is purely mathematical.

Rishi Sharma - 4 years, 12 months ago

@Sagar Shah I totally support these theories , but these are sadly :( just theories we don't have a proof for them. Going into a singularity = Death ... The gravitational field is so strong that it breaks everything up to subatomic level . The process is called Spaghettification. It is the vertical stretching and horizontal compression of objects into long thin shapes in the presence of very strong Gravitational field. We can slow time near a black hole ( Time dilation ), but we should not go beyond the photon sphere. After that there is no way to escape the gravitational field of the black hole. Escape Velocity >c> c

I think we can travel through space time ! Yes , if we somehow are successful to create a machine which will prevent us from getting converted into energy then, yes it may be possible, Recently the physicists are researching over the existence of white holes, the next step from a black hole! Combination of the two may lead to time travel(the wormhole principle).! Im not very sure but I saw in a t.v program that white holes can be found inside a black hole , we can harness its powers if we are somehow able to cross a black hole , the only problem with it is that it isn't stable for sufficient time, & hence as per now, we are unable to access them.

Basically time travel or travelling in the future is nothing , just leaping over a very large distance in a very short period of time, if we are somehow able to curve space time fabric & bent it such that we coincide two points which were very far apart in the fabric but very close after bending it , then that's time travel,!!

I THINK ONE WAY is to get near a very powerful gravitational field by the means of spaceship voyage so that our relative time period becomes very small , w.r.t our fellows at earth, & when we return , we'll find that we have travelled to the future that means say for example for every 1 week of ours in the gravitational field , somewhat like 100 yrs. Might have been passed on earth,!!,

So if we think that way we just need to create a very advanced spaceship , do tons of calculations, take risks & assumptions & set out for deep space voyage!!!!

I would recommend you to watch the episodes of "How the universe works" , & " Into the universe with Stephen Hawking" also his "Grand Design". Moreover, the sci - fi movie "Interstellar " is awesome for the knowledge. I like this space stuff very much !! .... .... Talking about speeds greater than the velocity of light, what about the tachyon ??? What if they get discovered??? I think swapnil das can explain these things better in every way, !

Btw , please feel free to correct me wherever im wrong, thank you!!!

Rishabh Tiwari - 5 years ago

No..its not possible as attaining spped of light is very difficult and square of it merely approaches infinty to us....and i somehow if we attain such speed....and travel........it would be like jumping into a black hole... .
