This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

the glass of water acts as a converging lens, which creates an inverted real image?

Yes @Aritra jana

Hmm... Water has been learning how to use PhotoShop? JK, obviously for such an image to appear, we'd need a converging lens, and I don't see anything else suspicious, so it must be the water.

Robert Haywood - 6 years, 7 months ago

Wonderful it is...very cute.!

Sandeep Bhardwaj - 6 years, 7 months ago

Due to cylindrical(curve) shape of water(thickness of glass neglected) image is inverted. Try a rectangular glass then arrows direction won't change!

Krishna Sharma - 6 years, 6 months ago

Wow!! That is one of the beautiful reasons why i love science, lol!!

Pysics... angle of incedence = angoe of reflection. The curved surface of the glass and the desnsity? Of water causes the light to bend more/differently then if it were traveling through air.

Amanda Cabrera - 6 years, 7 months ago

It is due to water.water acts as a converging lens and form invertered image.

satyam singh - 6 years, 6 months ago

It is due to water, as water acts as converging lens, which gives us an Inverted Real Image..........

yes got it right

U Z - 6 years, 7 months ago

When we filled water bcs of this the refractive index changes which act like a cylinderical lens and inverted image is formed

Roshan Singh - 6 years, 6 months ago

nice question

pankaj tyagi - 6 years, 6 months ago

when the water is filled in glass then it acts as a converging lens which makes real and inverted image

tushar kaushik - 6 years, 6 months ago

Thought it was about refraction when I say the water, but well physics is wide. Try using a ray diagram, awesome isn't it? Now since it is a concave mirror, try a convex one, you will get another awesome result!

Marc Vince Casimiro - 6 years, 6 months ago

internal total reflection

Arindam Biswas - 6 years, 7 months ago

After water is poured due to total internal reflection image is reversed

Chiranjeev Mishra - 6 years, 7 months ago

When we add water, because of water reflection, the left arrow seems to be a right arrow.

On the right track just worded oddly.
