chat for users

Brilliant should give a option for chat among its users so that they can discuss studies and share their views all over the world...This would increase the research in various fields!!

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

What if, if they discuss brilliant questions???

In order to cope with this problem, I would suggest adding a complaint feature in the chat section. If someone asks others answers to live Brilliant problems, others can lodge a complaint against that cheat, which would expose their conversation to the Brilliant staff. The concerned staff members would then look into their conversation and take appropriate measures against the cheat. Anyways, this is just a suggestion and I don't know whether this is feasible or not.

you are right sreejato,,,actually there is no space for such cheap work like asking qustion because brilliant is not just to get points by hook or by crook,,,but chat feature can be used to for interaction between two brilliant maths addicts,,,,this chat must show who are online so that,,,,they share their views over a concept!

Ravi Prakash Roy - 7 years, 10 months ago

Look around friend,in fb groups, math.stack and in other sites questions of brilliant are posted.Cheating can't ever be completely stopped. As sreejato suggested there should be a complaint option.

But it's silly if Brilliant let the cheat happen inside Brilliant it self. However i think Briliant staff control is needed.

@Hafizh Ahsan Permana umm cheating is cheating, inside or outside, does it really matter?

Soham Chanda - 7 years, 10 months ago

@Soham Chanda If we limit the ease which a person can cheat, then yes. Chat rooms are an easy place to cheat (and hard to moderate), especially if there are 1000+ people all on-line, chatting at once.

Stefan Qin - 7 years, 10 months ago

I would instead suggest a way to make the discussion forum more "social" - such as the addition of tabs including, but not limited to: science sections, maths sections, miscellaneous sections, etc, and of course any other sub-groups within sections if needed.

This offers distinct advantages from a chat system. For example, forum posts are much easier to moderate than chat rooms. This ensures minimal "cheating" (i.e posting of Brilliant problems). Furthermore, "trolling" will not present as much of a threat - a common problem with chat rooms.

Anyway, just my two cents. But I think that a chat system would be largely unnecessary given these other viable alternatives.

yes stefan,,you are right,,,but atleast it should show who are online ???

Ravi Prakash Roy - 7 years, 10 months ago

Of course it will. Stefan just suggested making sub-divisions in the chats relating to maths, science, etc so that it will be more user-friendly and for better moderation.

Abdullah Sherif - 7 years, 10 months ago

Those are some good ideas. I'd like to add that it would be cool if each post shows a view count, and perphaps even who viewed it, e.g. whether the staff has seen it or not.

yeah TIM,,,lets see if brilliant work on it or not????

Ravi Prakash Roy - 7 years, 10 months ago

For this purpose don't we have a discussion page...

Joydeep Roy - 7 years, 10 months ago

Brilliant can actually make , a chat in , Hall.com just like AoPS users have done :) Then people can chat , with each other also can hold group disussion and even indeed , the moderator of brilliant can then take care if they discuss any weakly challenge problem :)

Shivang Jindal - 7 years, 10 months ago

For me.. I think it's okay to have an option of having chat among users. I believe that all users here didn't just make an account to have big points but to enhance their (as well as I) skills in Math, Geometry, Physics, Com. Scie, and etc.. And because of this reason, users are probably competitive enough for them not to share his/her solutions or answers on some difficult problems.

Jeffer Dave Cagubcob - 7 years, 10 months ago

No, brilliant is for learning, let's leave social networking for chatting ;) Plus chatting could cause server crashes and lag.

my idea is that....most of them have been introduced to the live challenge right.....now if it is a group chat, the person would not dare to ask a brilliant question which would actually be exposed to everyone...isn't it?now it is not possible to have a lot of members on a group chat...if it is divided into various group chats with a limited amount of members in each group then it would be good... this is the basic thought i can give but there is a hole in it...... --> if the limit of a group chat is 22 members and there are 23 members online...what would the 23rd person do?? the solution - if he simply posts it to the discussion that i am alone in the group chat...the limit of the group can be extended to 24 members by the person who started the group chat..... and yes, there shouldn't be only two people in a group..perhaps he should also post "can anyone enter the group chat?" in the discussion..... if my language can't be understood or any problem in the way i told...just tell me.. :) :D
