Chatbox

After discussing with @Finn Hulse and @Archiet Dev, we have come to a conclusion that Brilliant should have some sort of way to communicate live with other Brilliantians. A sort of chatbox.

We think that it would help the Brilliant community. Rather than checking your emails constantly to see if someone who is online with you has replied to your comment, they could simply talk to you via this live stream. Staff, please reply. Like and Reshare. :D

P.S.: Why aren't the tags working? EDIT: It seems to not work on the notes, but does on comments.

  Easy Math Editor

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

@Sharky Kesa , I remember such an issue being raised up a few weeks back and then it was declined stating that it Brilliant was not a social networking site. Perhaps the staff also have a strong argument but I feel something similar would definitely make the discussions more efficient, better and productive.

How did you tag me? I can't tag anyone.

I don't know if it is a bug or not but for sure I can say that tagging people is not that efficient as it was initially. After writing "@" I had to write your name about four to five times slowly deleting and then rewriting . During this process you get the list once then you have to choose the person you have to tag. I know the process is vague, cumbersome and uncertain but unfortunately true. Remember delete very slowly and you might have to wait for sometime between deleting two consecutive letters. I hope this issue is resolved as soon as possible.

@Sharky Kesa Yeah I checked that after reading the "EDIT" and it did not work. It is indeed weird. It does seem to be bug.

Hey Sharky - Thanks for the feedback. This is something we have considered implementing, but we have some concerns about how noisy the site would become. We have other features planned for the summer, but we'll revisit how to improve discussions on Brilliant afterward.

And also, when you go to someone else's profile, you can't just post to her/him somewhere. (Or I just don't know how?)

Use this: https://brilliant.org/slackin/ I didn’t make it a hyperlink cause I didn’t fell like it

Annie Li - 3 years, 4 months ago

I thought of the same a long time ago.. which later came to a conclusion that it might not actually be a great idea.

We just lose the seriousness if there is a chat box. It will turn out to be like facebook. Difference being that we just talk about a Math or a Physics problem. Brilliant is more discussion based . With the chat box its just speaking whereas we think twice while commenting. Thereby, filtering the discussion.

If it is a private box, you don't want random people bugging you saying ,'Hey. Just wanted to ask if the answer to this problem is correct?'

A possible solution might be showing the email address of the user publicly(if he chooses to) or a link to his social networking site so they can communicate outside of Brilliant on an unrelated topic. If the discussion is about the topic on Brilliant, commenting feature is already available.
